Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father in Heaven,
How Hallowed,
Magnificent,
and Sanctified
is Your Most Holy Name.
How Blessed and How True is Your Word,
and How Mighty.
How Glorious,
to Span the Millennia,
To be Unfettered by Time and Space,
To Know The End from the Beginning
and the Beginning from The End.

Back in the late 1950's and Early 60's, it seemed perfectly respectable for kids to "go to the movies" by themselves. I distinctly remember going to see "The Ten Commandments" by myself, at the tender age of eleven. The neighborhood theater was called "The Rialto". Even back in the early 60's, it had seen better days. For over two hours I sat in the dark, and was totally enthralled by the movie. It was a Bible Story I had never heard before, and it explained the mysterious unleavened bread the Jewish kids brought in their school lunches for a whole week in the Spring. To this day, my favorite Old Testament Book is Exodus.

One thing bothered me though, and I'm sure it has bothered a lot of people fro nearly four millennia. That was, of course, the Last and most horrible Plague: The Death of the Firstborn. As nasty and stubborn as Pharaoh was, one could not help but feel for him (played masterfully by Yul Brynner) as he poured out his anguished heart to his fake god. And, to make matters worse, I was a Firstborn. I brought this concern to Mom.

Oh, you have nothing to worry about, she said. "Only the First Born SONS were killed. You're a GIRL!"

Somehow, I didn't find that very comforting. Because I was a GIRL, I didn't qualify as a "Firstborn"? What the heck!

Although I'm sure Mom didn't mean to hurt me, and she was just stating what happened in the Bible, I felt slighted. As if I was not quite a "Firstborn" if I wasn't a "Firstborn SON".

My umbrage over not being worthy of being slain by The Angel of Death on the Night of The Passover didn't take into account the Cultural Aspects of the Firstborn Son in Biblical Times. It was the Firstborn Son who received the Largest share of the Inheritance, with very complex portions for the rest of the family. It was the Firstborn who became the New Head of the family, and who carried on the Father's Name.

While these were rigid rules in society, The Story of the People of God is filled with exceptions. Cain, the Firstborn, slew his younger brother Abel, and then Seth becomes the progenitor of the Chosen People. Ishmael is subservient to Isaac, Esau sells his Birthright to his younger brother Jacob, Jacob steals Esau's Blessing, and Reuben shames himself out of his birthright by going after one of his father's concubines. Moses himself was a THIRD child, as he had a big brother Aaron and big sister Miriam. King David was the youngest of eight. While Society and Culture place a lot of significance into being the Firstborn, evidently God has other plans.

In today's passage, Believers are called "Sons of God". Some modern translations may say "Children of God", because they don't want to offend us ladies. However, the word "Sons" isn't talking about the sex of the Child of God. It's talking about the Position as a "Son". Jesus is the Firstborn, and we are all Partakers of His Inheritance. As Paul said:

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. (Galatians 3:28 KJV)
