Back in the 1960's, I saw Carlos Santana many times. Whether at the Boston Tea Party, The "Gahhhden", or other venue, I really loved that band. Fifty years later, my sister and I got to see Santana again, two more times, in 2019, and 2021. The band now features his wife on drums, and son on keyboard, so its a "Family Thing". The music, which is a fusion of Latin Rhythms, Soul, and 60's Rock, had us old folks dancing in the aisles.

In the late 70's and early 80's, I worked in a Christian Book Store that also sold Contemporary Christian Music (Vinyl and Cassettes). One of my favorite albums was by Leon Patillo. Leon had been in Carlos Santana's band back in the 60's so I probably have seen him perform many times but didn't realize it.

Here, for your enjoyment, is my favorite song from Leon.

You will notice that this lovely song doesn't have a lot of lyrics. In fact, it is based upon just two Scripture Passages, lifted verbatim from The King James Bible.

The first one is Today's passage, Matthew 28:19, which is also known as "The Great Commission".

As an artist, I know what a "commission" is. The Client gives a deposit, and states exactly what he wants in the painting. Upon completion, the artist presents the painting and collects the rest of the money. The Artist and the Client enter into a contract that states the terms, and, hopefully, the commission goes as planned.

It's not up to the Artist to totally change the plan according to his own idea of what the painting should be. Even though Michelangelo was supposed to execute a simple depiction of The Twelve Apostles on the Sistine Chapel's ceiling, he spent nearly four years up there "doing his own thing". The Pope who originally hired him had passed away, and, possibly the new Pope had no idea what Michelangelo was up to. The results, of course, were magnificent, but then Michelangelo was given another commission, the Last Judgment. Again, Michelangelo decided to ignore the terms of the commission and "do his own thing". As a result, other artists were hired to paint over certain body parts that were deemed inappropriate in an altarpiece. The end result looks like a bunch of rising saints and condemned sinners wearing diapers.

We artist just LOVE to express our own Vision, but a "commission is a commission". If our only income comes from commissions, then we have to explore our inner Michelangelo on our own time, unless of course, if the client says, "Knock Yourself Out!"

In The Great Commission, Jesus gives us His Design for the furtherance of the Gospel. He tells us to Go, and Teach (or make Disciples) of ALL Nations, Baptizing them "In The Name of the Father, The Son, and The Holy Ghost". Many religions have interpreted this as coercion, a form of "social justice", or even Marxist Revolution. Many have debated the formula for Baptism, and whole denominations have formed based on how, when, and why Baptism should take place. One thing is certain though. That Baptism is in The Name of The Father, The Son, and The Holy Ghost. There is no other "formula" in Scripture.

Just GO, and Do it.

That’s a good way of looking at it!

There are people who don’t like anything “nontraditional”, and they sometimes stifle a truly gifted person from sharing the Gospel in their own way.

Jesus said “Go!”. He didn’t say, “and only use 1st Century Instruments”.
