Whenever any of us kids needed something typewritten, we went to Mom. She had a manual typewriter and she did a wonderful job. In High School, one was enrolled in either the "Business" Course or the "College" Course. Only the "Business" Course taught Typing and Shorthand, both of which were essential to somebody who was going to College. Go Figure. It was Mom who typed out our Term Papers and Senior Projects. It was also Mom who typed and helped us compose "Business Letters" when we needed to apply for a loan, or complain to a government agency about some injustice, or write a recommendation. She knew exactly how to compose a proper Business Letter, with the salutations, margins, paragraphs, facts presented in a convincing order, and appropriate closing arguments. If she needed "legalese", she would consult her best friend Megs, who was a Legal Secretary. When Word Processors first came out, Dad bought her one. This gave our letters a beautiful, crisp, format that was even MORE impressive to the Addressee. In Ancient Times, Mom could have made a nice living as a Scribe. These were people who had the exact skills I just described, and were often the most trusted advisors to kings.

St. Paul sometimes used the services of a Scribe, but when he wrote his letters himself, he said so. "See my big round handwriting!" was one of Paul's expressions, authenticating his letters.

Today's Scripture passage is from the First Letter of Peter. We don't know if he used a Scribe or if he wrote the original himself, but the opening is very elegant. Whether he wrote or dictated the Letter, he attributes his thoughts to The Holy Spirit. This is called Inspiration. The actual words are the words of Peter, but the ideas are inspired by the Holy Spirit.

He opens with a proper Salutation, stating immediately the Sender and the intended Recipients of the Letter. This is the exact type of thing that goes at the top of a Business Letter. Imagine reading a whole letter, and not knowing from whom it came, or even if the letter was meant for YOU. Peter "takes care of business" in the first sentence.

He speaks of the Believers as being "in Exile". While there are Historic instances of "exile", such as Emperor Claudius kicking all the Jews out of Rome, this might mean that, as Believers, they were already being ostracized for their Faith. The King James Version translates "exiles" as "strangers". Sometimes, one may feel like a "stranger" or an "exile", even when in one's own country.

Peter offers a comforting word to these "strangers and exiles". He pronounces that God has chosen them from Eternity, and already knew ahead of time what would be. He IS Omniscient, which means Knowing Everything at the Same Time. There are no Surprises, no Learning Curve, and no Misunderstandings. God just KNOWS. Peter tells this to the Believers as he pronounces "Grace and Peace" to them.
