The Fourth Grade Classroom held its breath together as we watched the grainy black-and-white TV set perched on a high cart at the front of the classroom. For most of the morning we watched endless animations of a capsule orbiting the Earth, with John Glenn strapped inside. Now we were watching breathless reporting of the tremendous heat and stress that was being exerted upon the capsule as it broke orbit and plummeted to Earth. Since the capsule splashed down 41 miles from where predicted, we didn't see the actual landing in real time. The same crude animation depicted the capsule being slowed by three huge parachutes blossoming outward, as the capsule hit the water. It must have still been quite a rough ride. John Glenn was such a hero to me that the title of my Science Project that year was "John Glenn's Orbits". I made a papier-mache model of the earth with the three orbits traced upon it, and I got a prize in the Science Fair. (Everybody else, it seemed, had made battery operated doorbells!)

Mom didn't think much of the Space Program, and I vainly tried to convince her that the wonderful inventions that made her life easier (Telecommunications, Microwave Ovens, Instant Concentrated Orange Juice)were all developed either FOR Space Travel or Because of it. Nope, she wasn't interested. It was a passion I shared with Dad though. He and I often watched Launches and Recoveries together.

It was on Mom and Dad's 35th Wedding Anniversary, that I was wallpapering the back bedroom and watching a Launch on a little color TV in the corner of the room. I like to multitask, and this this was a perfect setup. I planned to visit Mom and Dad after the launch and maybe go out to eat with them to celebrate their Anniversary. I heard the Countdown and stopped working for a moment to watch the TV. This was going to be of particular interest, as a woman from my area was onboard. Suddenly, in Real Time, the Challenger exploded in the sky. The whole country was plunged into mourning.

From the early 1970's, I was obsessed with Whales. I even donated to Greenpeace and had a "SAVE THE WHALES" bumper sticker. I read Moby Dick, and visited the Whaling Museums in New Bedford, Nantucket, and the Charles W. Morgan in Mystic Seaport CT. Dad shared this Love of the Sea with me, and had taken us to all these places when we were kids, but I kept it going even as an adult. I named my first Rock Band after the Latin Nomenclature for Dolphins.

Living in Florida only exacerbated these passions. Seeing the Space Shuttle over Boca Raton was a regular occurrence, and the Double Sonic Boom over Ft. Meyers signaled all the beach-goers to stand and applaud as another crew made it safely home. Marathon Key was only 130 miles from where I lived, a nice motorcycle ride to the Dolphin Research Center. Here, I could watch Dolphins receive Veterinary Care (they were much more cooperative than my dog!), and got to watch them training and playing with humans. The thing about the facility that impressed me the most was that it was open to the sea during inclement weather. The Dolphins were safer in the open ocean than in the facility. One would imagine that, once they had their freedom, they would never return, but they always did.

My Five and Six O'Clock appointments were canceled yesterday, so I had an opportunity to watch the return of two astronauts who got a nasty surprise nine months ago. They were only supposed to have been at the International Space Station for a week or so, but, due to safety concerns, ended up being there for nine months.

Because of politics and other nonsense, NASA wasn't equipped to just go up there and rescue them (we'll just leave it at that).

I don't even own a TV anymore, but I put the coverage on full screen on my computer and watched with rapt attention.

In startling, perfect color, the Capsule emerged from a clear blue sky. The Heat Shield was glowing like a blast furnace, and it looked like nobody could possibly survive being sealed up inside. Everybody online seemed to be holding their breath.

The Drogue Chutes deployed, and Mission Control erupted in applause. Then the four main parachutes opened up and danced in the sky like huge silky blossoms.

When the capsule splashed down, the billowing parachutes seemed to be choreographed, fluttering in a circle around the capsule. The smaller boats sped in to disconnect the chutes and retrieve them, and then...

The Dolphins showed up. For the rest of the operation, they danced with joy around the capsule and the boats, celebrating the astronauts safe return.

That really made my day.
