Police arrest suspect for desecrating Wichita Catholic church; FBI aiding investigation of alleged ‘hate crime’

CV NEWS FEED // Authorities say they arrested a 23-year-old man Sunday in connection with an alarming act of vandalism and burglary at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Wichita, Kansas, which has left the parish community shaken.

The attack, which occurred early Saturday morning, involved significant destruction to religious statues, smashed glass, and the defacing of sacred spaces. An American flag was also burned inside the church.

According to KWCH 12 News, the Wichita Police Department and the FBI have been involved in the investigation.

“Recognizing the severity of this crime, WPD officers and investigators — alongside the ATF — immediately launched a full-scale investigation,” the Wichita police stated on Facebook Sunday morning. “Our dedicated Crime Scene Investigation team worked diligently to analyze evidence, leading to the swift identification of a suspect.”

According to the police, the suspect was charged with burglary, criminal desecration, and criminal damage to property. They also said the case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney and federal prosecutors for formal charging considerations.

“This reprehensible act of vandalism will not be tolerated,” said Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan. “Our officers and investigators worked tirelessly to bring this suspect to justice.”

The church has announced that all services are canceled until further notice as the extent of the damage is assessed.

The Kansas Catholic Conference condemned the act, calling it a “hate crime.” In a statement posted on social media, the group described the destruction.

“After forcing their way inside, statues were destroyed, glass smashed, and other extensive damage exacted upon this sacred space,” the Conference wrote. “St. Patrick Church is a predominantly Latino parish situated in a working-class neighborhood of North-Central Wichita. …The FBI is investigating. A Satanic website was scrawled on a wall. This is the face of evil.”

CatholicVote also spoke out, sharing details of the incident on X (formerly Twitter) and raising concerns about anti-Catholic sentiment. Some Catholic leaders have linked this act of vandalism to a broader trend of hostility toward religious institutions.

The attack comes as controversy grows over a planned Satanic “worship ritual” at the Kansas State Capitol on March 28, further fueling concerns about rising anti-Christian activity.

Local Catholic leaders are asking for prayers for the St. Patrick parish community and calling on law enforcement to bring those responsible to justice. The incident underscores the growing need for vigilance in protecting places of worship from acts of hatred and violence.

This incident at St. Patrick Catholic Church comes at a time when Catholic leaders in Kansas are raising concerns about increasing hostility toward the faith. Recently, controversy has erupted over a planned Satanic “black mass” at the Kansas State Capitol.

A March 12 CatholicVote report detailed how Catholic activists have condemned the event, describing it as “a vile and despicable Satanic worship ritual.” Groups like the American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family, and Property (TFP) launched petitions urging Kansas Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly to cancel the event, stating that “sacrilege is simply NOT free speech.”

In response to the upcoming event, Benedictine College announced on March 14 that it would dedicate its weekly Holy Hours, Rosaries, and Memorare prayers throughout the month to the conversion of those organizing the ritual. College leaders emphasized that “our response must be spiritual,” calling upon Catholics to engage in prayer and reparation rather than despair.

Gov. Kelly ordered on March 15 that the Satanic event be moved outside the Capitol instead of taking place inside. The event’s organizer called the ritual a pro-abortion protest against the influence of religious organizations in Kansas politics, particularly the Kansas Catholic Conference.

Catholic leaders, however, criticized the governor’s decision to allow the event on state grounds, calling it “a public attack on the Catholic faith and a desecration of the sacred.”

this one really ticks me off because St. Patrick is my chosen saint!

Prayer of Saint Patrick:

Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me.
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

One thing I would really like to see come out of the Trump renaissance is the elimination of ‘hate crime’ law. Crimes need to be objective to actions, not subjective to ones mind set.

This is a lower priority to many other things that need fixing, but its still one that needs to be fixed.

Someday, people will figure out that jail is not a deterrent. Waterboarding and solitary are deterrents.

Oh they do and I’ve posted about it. Remember that women’s group that would protest topless? Their name escapes me but they would go and disrupt Catholic Masses a lot. Well they did it at a mosque too. they guys there were not having it and flung them out like rag dolls.

I do not like to see ATF involved in things that do not involve alcohol, tobacco, firearms or explosives. I have noticed them recently in other cases that they have no business in. I hope that they will be reigned in. We have seen what they can do.

Really don’t get the point, do you?
A Catholic church was horribly vandalized and desecrated and you want to argue the meaning of the word Saint?!
