Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Oh LORD,
Our God,
How Excellent is Your Name over all the Earth!
How Marvelous,
How Glorious,
and How Magnificent!
It is You Who created the Bright and Dark Stars,
The Galaxies and the Singularities,
The Quasars and the Star Clusters,
That man in his hubris are only now just discovering.

This morning, I brewed my usual pot of French Roast Coffee, and sat down to write. Then, a bunch of things happened and I got interrupted. After tightening the screws on my computer chair, which had almost collapsed under me, I finally was able to boot up the computer. I gulped a swig of coffee which had been sitting on the desk all this time, and nearly spewed it out all over the screen. It was LUKEWARM! Blecccch! Thirty seconds in the microwave brought it back up to temp, so here we go.

Several Mobile Homes in my community had a "Door" problem. All Homes and Apartments in Massachusetts have to have at least two means of egress, for fire safety. Even if one is just a large window over a fire escape, there have to be two ways of escape. Mobile Homes are no different. In a "Single Wide", that second door is usually located along a narrow hallway, and opens outward, like the door on a camper. This is in contrast to the Front Door, which normally enters the Living Room, and opens inward. People who have this arrangement rarely use that back door, as it is a bit inconvenient. Also, if it breaks, it's nearly impossible to replace. The house next door to mine was a prime example.

The door opened into the kitchen, was one that swings outward, made of aluminum, and very "camper-ish". It also leaked and ruined the floor in the kitchen in front of it.

My neighbor didn't have much money, but her son Mel came to fix the floor. What he discovered was a veritable lasagna of old linoleum, rotting floorboards, caving joists, and soggy plywood that reached several inches. Mel hacked away, removed all the rotting material, repaired the joists, and rebuilt the entire kitchen floor with laminate. What a delightful difference!

But now, the Kitchen Door wouldn't close properly.

Because it was one of those doors that open outward, it could not be replaced by a quick trip to Home Depot (a mere three miles away!). The opening for the door was a bit narrower than a conventional door opening, and the door could not be opened into the kitchen as it was blocked by the stove and gas lines. Nothing on the body of the trailer could be modified to accept a normal door. A search online showed that the door would have to be custom-made at a cost of nearly $1000.00. Of course, there was only one company on the planet that had this door, and they had the market all sewed up. Since they were in South Carolina, there would also be shipping costs. And so, the door was held closed with a board, which looked really "From Hunger".

Since that trashy-looking arrangement faced my yard, I felt the need to find a solution. I studied the door, examined the sill, and made suggestions, but nothing seemed to help. Finally we figured it out. If we couldn't change the door, we would change the threshold and the frame. After a day's worth of shimming and testing, the door finally closed properly. VICTORY!

There are a number of famous illustrations based upon Today's Scripture. These pictures, that are popular on Sunday School walls, show Jesus knocking on a door. There is usually no doorknob on the door, as it can only be opened from the inside. Sunday School Teachers often make the analogy that this represents Jesus knocking on the door of your heart. In fact, that's what I always thought it meant.

It's not a bad analogy, but it doesn't fit the context of the Passage. Jesus isn't knocking on the door of an individual; He is knocking on the door of a Church. The church in question is the Church of Laodacea, which is called "The Lukewarm Church." The response of Jesus to their lukewarmness is the same as mine with the coffee.

This is a double-pun, as the City of Laodacea had a water problem. Their water came from two locations, via Roman Aqueducts. One location had sparkling clean icy water from the mountains, and the other, hot mineral water from volcanic springs. As both sources were far away from the City, the water from both arrived in the city in the same state: Lukewarm. It was very unpalatable, and there were neither refrigeration nor microwave ovens to correct it. When Jesus said "I will spew you out of my mouth", there was no question what He was talking about.

Some scholars say that we are living in the "Laodacean Church Age" right now. Jesus is standing at the door and knocking. The door can only be opened from the inside.

Will somebody open the door?
