Oh My! I am SO Glad I chose the King James Version for this particular series. (The Names and Titles of God). Stay with me, and, even if you had never read Today's Scripture before, I think you will agree with me.

1. The Award: Every year, the Local Music Community gives an award to somebody, who, while not necessarily a musician, has done a great deal to promote, support, or advance the cause of Live Music. Sometimes its a Booking Agent, sometimes a Publicist, a Producer, or just somebody who maintains a Website. Whatever the person's role has been, the Award recognizes his or her selfless dedication to the Musicians and Venues of the region.

2. The Neighborhood: In most neighborhoods there is someone who stands out. In a time of disaster, this person takes charge, organizes relief efforts, makes the appropriate calls to the right officials, and generally provides the impetus to "get things done". This is not usually a person who has been elected to this position. It is more likely to be an organic thing that just happens.

3. The Officials: My State Rep is very unusual. He really seems to care about the people in his district. In fact, he is such a helpful, decent individual, that even those who would never DREAM of voting for anyone in his political party have his sign on the lawn at Election Time. I have his personal telephone number, and he says to "call me anytime if you need help". A few years ago, this fine gentleman was challenged by a young lawyer, who just happened to be my music student. Even though the lawyer was a lovely man, a Marine, and very kind to me, I couldn't possibly vote for him when the Incumbent was SUCH a Pillar of the Community!

All three of these local heroes and heroines can be called "Pillars of the Community". This is a figure of speech in our Language which comes directly from The King James Bible.

My brother lives in a 200-year-old farmhouse in a rural area. He is infuriated that Developers have bought up the land around his home, and are building dozens of identical "McMansions". His Number One complaint is that the houses have FAKE PLASTIC PILLARS that go up the front of the otherwise featureless houses.

"They're FAKE Pillars," he fumes. "They don't hold anything up! They're just for looks!"

He's right about that. If a "pillar" doesn't hold anything up, it's not really a "pillar". It's merely decorative trim.

That brings me back to the King James. When looking for images to illustrate the Thread, I came across a particularly awesome picture of Outer Space with the Scripture Passage inscribed upon it. But the translation was the NLT (New Living Translation) and it rendered "Pillar" as "Citizen". Now a "Pillar of the Community" is probably a Citizen, but not all citizens are Pillars. Lots of people are citizens, but aren't engaged in holding anything up. If anything, they can be like the plastic pillars on a McMansion. The structure is holding them up, not the other way around.

The Holy Spirit tells us in this Passage that "Overcomers" will be made Pillars in The Temple of God.

I can't even imagine any higher Award than that.

Good insight. Currently I’m noticing within a particular church, where the “pillars” are members who shun non-members. The church is like a social club of those who are “in.” Over the past few years attendance went from 150 or so to 30-40 per week. First time visitors don’t return or after a few visits. Sad.
