One of the effects of growing up in the city of Boston is a passion for The Boston Marathon Footrace. Other cities have marathons, but, for some reason, we kids thought that it was the only one in the World. Twenty-Six grueling miles from Hopkington, MA would be filled with fans, and Traffic would be tied up for miles. For people working along that corridor, in essential services like Newton-Wellesley Hospital or the Nursing Home where I was employed, it was a nightmare getting into work. However, it was cool to have a ringside seat at a window in one of these facilities, and watch the enormous wave of humanity run by. Traditionally, it was a day off from School, because most kids wouldn't have been able to even get near the school if they tried.

The Boston Marathon has its own particular Lore. Every year, we would watch Johnny Kelley run the race. Every year, Johnny would get another year older, and his time would be a little bit longer. As the years wore on, we cheered Johnny for merely running and his reaching the Finish Line, which was always carried on the evening news, no matter how long it took. As the First Place Winning names became more and more foreign to us (it is an International competition), we rapidly forgot them, but we will always remember Johnny Kelley. His Victory wasn't so much coming in First, but in Running the race and persevering despite his increasing age and decreasing speed. The only names I remember from 70 years of watching the Boston Marathon are:

Rosie Ruiz, who CHEATED,

The Tsarnayev Brothers, who were evil domestic terrorists who bombed the Finish Line in 2013,

and, the aforementioned Johnny Kelley. Johnny Kelley is remembered for his perseverance and his faithfulness, and was a childhood hero of mine. Even though he only once came in First, way back in 1957, he will always be a winner in my book.

The winner of the Marathon is crowned with a wreath of laurel leaves. This crown goes all the way back to Ancient Greece, and is mentioned by both Paul and John in the context of "Running the Race" with "faithfulness and perseverance". It is, however, a perishable crown. Paul tells us to run the race for an "imperishable crown", one that doesn't wither, and lasts for eternity.

The little town of Smyrna seems to have been less prosperous than the other cities mentioned in Revelation. But the Holy Spirit tells them that they are Rich in the things that matter. Their crown isn't attained by being the fastest, nor is it obtained by cheating, or even by terrorism.

Although there is a lot less drama or sensationalism involved, the Crown of Victory bestowed upon Smyrna exceeds all the others, and will last forever..

I remember the Boston marathon and the bombings. Wow!

Speaking races, watched Chariots of Fire (1981) last night, about Eric Liddle and Harold Abrahams.

On shocking piece of trivia, I uncovered was in the credits for the executive producer.

Dodi Fayed.

Ring a bell?

He was Princess Diana’s boyfriend, and the Princess and Dodi were killed in that infamous Paris car chase in 1997. (Confirmed that on imdb.com)
