Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Heavenly Father,
Blessed Are You, Oh LORD,
Our God, King of The Universe!
You Alone Are Worthy of Worship and Praise.
You Alone Are Holy,
You Alone Are The Almighty,
You Alone Are the One True God!
Ancient of Days,
Rock of All Ages,
El Shaddai,
All Sufficient,
Our Great Provider and Sovereign Lord,
How Excellent is Your Holy Name Over All the Earth!

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

โ€The Greatest Of these Is Love.โ€

Commentator Ben Shapiro did a segment about his "Favorite Stage Musicals of All Time". I mostly agreed with his choices. Number One was "My Fair Lady" which was also my Mom's Favorite, and another top spot went to "South Pacific" which was my Dad's. Number Two was "Fiddler on the Roof", which is one of mine. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Ben offered a little different perspective on "Fiddler on the Roof" which had not occurred to me. He said, that, as an Orthodox Jew, he had a little issue with Tevye's motivation in the opening number, "Tradition". It seemed to Ben that the only reason for Tevye's Religion was because that's what his people had been for centuries, and that was that. It didn't square with Ben's own deeply held Faith. But, other than that, the Music was Great, the Story was excellent, the dancing terrific, and the Lyrics magnificent. I could only posit that Ben has never been subjected to a pogrom, and has never been in a position to question God about WHY do the Righteous suffer like they often do.

Anyway, I agree with Ben on every Musical on his list, except #8, "Sweeny Todd" (Yuck). Here's The Video.

I have no idea who is the author of this next little parable, but I can't take credit for it. I remember it being shared with me some 40 years ago, and it stuck with me, so I will share it again with you:

Imagine a City Sidewalk in the height of Summer, so hot you could fry an egg on it. An Artist places two objects in the bright sun, exposing them to the exact same conditions. One of the objects is a lump of clay; the other is a lump of hard wax.

After the worst heat of the day has passed, the Artist goes back to the sidewalk and retrieves the two objects.

The clay has been baked so thoroughly that it is now a new substance...Adobe...and is as hard as a rock. However, when struck, it crumbles into dust, because it is brittle as well as hard.

The Wax, however, has become soft enough that it can be molded into something beautiful. The Artist is able to put his own ideas into the wax, and use it to create a Work of Art.

Although the analogy is imperfect (most of them are!), this little story goes well with Today's Scripture passage. Just as the same Hot Sun beat down upon the Clay and the Wax, the two substances responded differently. One of them became hardened, and the other became malleable. The difference was not in the stresses that were dealt, but in the response to them.

When one is in the midst of a crisis, it's easy to think that nobody in the History of Mankind has ever been subjected to such misery before. It doesn't matter that humans have been subjected to the worst atrocities ever, when one is in a crisis, all the stress responses fire off at once. Our shields go up, adrenaline kicks in, and the "Fight or Flight" Reflex fills our body with whatever hormones and chemicals we need to get through the crisis. Sometimes, people can do great feats of strength during these times of stress that they would never have been able to achieve in normal times.

The same stress applied to one person can have a totally different effect on another, like the Clay and the Wax.

Do hardships harden your heart, and make you bitter, angry, and brittle? Or does the same hardship give you extra strength to learn from the experience, gain wisdom, and develop the compassion to minister to others when they are facing a similar crisis?

We all have to go through the Wilderness from time to time. The Holy Spirit works in us best when we are going through the stress. Let's be Wax in The Hands of the Artist instead of brittle clay.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

โ€ And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. The Greatest Of these Is Love.โ€ (1 Corinthians 13:13 KJV)

Psalm 6

To the leader: with stringed instruments; according to The Sheminith. A Psalm of David.

1 O Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger,
or discipline me in your wrath.
2 Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am languishing;
O Lord, heal me, for my bones are shaking with terror.
3 My soul also is struck with terror,
while you, O Lordโ€”how long?

4 Turn, O Lord, save my life;
deliver me for the sake of your steadfast love.
5 For in death there is no remembrance of you;
in Sheol who can give you praise?

6 I am weary with my moaning;
every night I flood my bed with tears;
I drench my couch with my weeping.
7 My eyes waste away because of grief;
they grow weak because of all my foes.

8 Depart from me, all you workers of evil,
for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping.
9 The Lord has heard my supplication;
the Lord accepts my prayer.
10 All my enemies shall be ashamed and struck with terror;
they shall turn back, and in a moment be put to shame.

I know I’m a day late, but I feel so strongly about this that I just had to post!

You wrote,”Ben offered a little different perspective on “Fiddler on the Roof” which had not occurred to me. He said, that, as an Orthodox Jew, he had a little issue with Tevye’s motivation in the opening number, “Tradition”. It seemed to Ben that the only reason for Tevye’s Religion was because that’s what his people had been for centuries, and that was that. It didn’t square with Ben’s own deeply held Faith.”

I think Tevye’s faith is wonderfully expressed when he sings “If I were Rich Man,” and the following verse:

“If I were rich, I’d have the time that I lack
To sit in the synagogue and pray
And maybe have a seat by the eastern wall
And I’d discuss the holy books with the learned men
Seven hours every day
And that would be the sweetest thing of all
Oy.”

The intense emotion that Chaim Topol puts into singing those lyrics speaks volumes about the character’s deep love of the Word and of his God who Authored it.

That’s interesting. Ben forgot that part of “If I were a rich man”.

I confess, I did too.
