In the Christian Bookstore, where I worked in 1982, there was a decorative plaque that looked like this:



It was a pun on the word "JOY", which illustrated a hierarchy of priorities that would produce that "emotion". While I agreed with the principle of the motto, I pondered that it still was an instruction to DO SOMETHING in order to "achieve" Joy.

From Augustine to Luther, from Calvin to Arminius, and to Modern-Day Theologians, People have argued over the meaning of today's verse. We won't be solving this puzzle today on this Thread, so I won't even try. The best course is to just look at the Verses, and at what they actually say, and rejoice in their meaning.

I will be careful as I tiptoe through the TULIPs (Systematic Theology Pun) on this subject!

Perhaps much of the controversy comes from the KJV's use of the word "election". Other translations use the word "chosen", but the effect is the same. It indicates that God, in His inexplicable mercy, had already "chosen" me from eternity to be one of His Own.

Well, of course He knew. He's Omniscient, and there's nothing He doesn't know.

The dissonance arises when a person interprets this as "He chose me because I'm SPECIAL!". or "I'm CHOSEN because I did all the RIGHT THINGS and I DESERVE it." While most of us would agree that such declarations are extreme, there are whole sects that believe this way.

Like every other verse we have meditated upon, this one is best read in context. Paul is addressing Believers in the Thessalonian Church, who, for some reason, thought that Jesus had already returned and took the REAL Believers home with Him. They felt like they had been "Left Behind". Paul assures them that a whole lot of things had to happen before the cataclysmic event would take place, and, when it does, EVERYBODY will know it.

Paul opens his letter with an explanation of The Holy Spirit's role in the Sanctification of Believers. He speaks of a state of being that is a Fruit of the Spirit, "Joy". A person can't "Gin Up Joy" by doing things. That belief only begets addictions which require more and more consumption in order to achieve the same effect. Each excess needs augmenting for the next "thrill". That's not "Joy". It may be euphoria, it may be ecstasy, but it's never Joyous.

Joy doesn't come from external stimuli. It is fruit that comes from The Indwelling Holy Spirit. It is the JOY that cultivates the hierarchy in the plaque. "Jesus, Others, You" isn't something you DO to achieve Joy. It is the Fruit of the Joy that is in you because of the Holy Spirit.

The proper reaction to the word "election" is not Pride at being chosen. It is, instead, a humble Joy and deep gratitude to the One Who chose you from the Foundation of the World to make you His own.
