Last Night at the Open Mike, there was an interesting mix of songs. Perhaps it was because it occurred at the confluence of several dates that were important to the Boomer Generation.

The first date was February 3rd, 1959. This was the day that three Rock and Roll artists and their pilot were killed in a plane crash. lt was commemorated in the song "American Pie", which was sung by our host, Scottie. It's a long, long, song, but everybody knew it and sang along.

The next date that got a lot of attention was February 9th, 1964. That was when The Beatles appeared on American TV for the first time. I was 11, and had just gotten a guitar for Christmas. All the "older" musicians there shared this memory, and the younger ones all knew about it. It was a common thread among us, and so, a lot of us sang Beatles songs.

Friday is Valentine's Day, so most of us sang Love Songs. It was an interesting night, to say the least.

Another shared memory of the Boomer Generation is Star Trek. Originally rejected as a series (We already have "Lost in Space!" 🤪), Star Trek changed our language, our ideas about Space Travel, and even our culture. Here are some of the Expressions we see in Memes to this day:

"He's playing 4D Chess" (from Spock's pastime)

"He's Dead, Jim" (Dr. McCoy)

"Beam Me Up, Scottie" (referencing the Transporter).

While later series may have featured better Special Effects and Sets, they didn't contain the spirit of the Original Series, in my most humble opinion. There is only one meme that I can think of from any other Series beside the Original, and that is the slogan of a enemy known as The Borg. That slogan is:

"RESISTANCE IS FUTILE"

The Borg would say this as they were "assimilating" humans, by injecting them with nano-particles that turned the them into machines, all controlled by a central hive. The Borg considered themselves to be "irresistible". However, this Irresistability was not born of Wonder, Awesomeness, or Incredible LOVE. It was by subterfuge and compulsion.

The Holy Spirit is "Irresistible" in a way that defies my poor description. He draws people with cords of Love, of Peace, Grace, and Faith. He will never force you to do anything. This is a Mystery, and Theologians have argued over this for centuries. "How can ANYONE resist the Holy Spirit, Who is irresistible?"

Rather than write a whole book about this, I will just refer you to the testimony of Deacon Stephen, who was on trial for his life:

"You always resist the Holy Spirit!"

Like the Johnny Mercer song says;

When an irresistible force such as you
Meets an old immovable object like me
You can bet just as sure as you live
Something's gotta give

The Council and the mob believed that they could resist The Holy Spirit by killing Stephen. Instead, Stephen, filled with The Holy Spirit, forgave them while he was being stoned to death.

One man, who was busy resisting The Holy Spirit, held the coats of those who were stoning Stephen. That same man continued to resist the Holy Spirit by getting letters of permission to arrest and murder people who expressed this New Faith.

He resisted, resisted, and resisted, until Jesus knocked him off his horse on the way to Damascus.

It was then that Paul learned that his "resistance was futile"!

And I'm really glad he did.
