Our Father,

There are as many ways of teaching Guitar as there are Guitar Teachers. I learned that when I first started playing Bass Guitar about ten years ago.

The first teacher just taught me iconic bass lines from various songs. I learned where to put my fingers to play a line that everybody recognized.

The second teacher was really into "Theory". He had me play scales and modes up and down the neck, using a mysterious formula called "The Circle of Fifths". I rapidly learned all the notes on the fretboard and all the scales, some of which dated back to Pythagoras!

My third and last teacher combined all of the above.

In my own teaching style, I try to combine all three, but also sing along with my students. Hopefully, we are doing real songs by the first or second lesson, along with Theory, AND Practice.

One of the most important concepts that a Bass Player has to grasp is the Chord Sequence. Since the Bass is a loud and domineering instrument, it would be disastrous to sound out a note that clashes with the rest of the band. Even if the song has only four chords, those chords could be in any of an enormous number of sequences. Sometimes these sequences change within the song. In Taylor Swift's song "Teardrops On My Guitar", there are three separate sequences: The Verse is "1, 6m, 4, 5', the Pre-Chorus is "6m, 4, 1, 5", and the Chorus is "1, 5, 6m, 4".

That may sound like Greek to a non-musician, but a guitar player knows exactly what I'm talking about. (It actually IS Greek, going back to Pythagoras, but I digress).

Kids know who Pythagoras is, because they take Geometry in Middle School. "Pythagoras? You mean, The Triangle Guy?" is a question I am often asked by my students.

I find it interesting that an Adolescent Kid in the 21st Century knows all about Pythagoras. I'm not sure how much Source Material exists that proves his existance. Were any of his own writings preserved anywhere? We seem to know all about his Theorem with the Right-Angle Triangle, and his theories about Musical Intervals. It looks like Somebody kept some kind of record of what was going on back then. I'm going to have to look it up!

Needless to say, the easiest songs to teach are the ones that use the same sequence throughout. Carol King's "Stand By Me" uses "1, 6m, 4, 5" all the way through. Tom Petty's "Learning to Fly" uses "4, 1, 6m, 5", an unusual sequence, over and over. Those songs are easy to teach, but they are Hit Songs, so the Students enjoy playing them.

All this talk about Sequences brings to mind yesterday's arduous task of connecting the Bluetooth on my computer. I tried every sequence i could think of, and, finally, it sprang to life. As the Comedy Routine says: "It's Always In The Last Place You Look." Once you have found it, you don't have to search anymore. This morning, when I went to "Boot Up", I closed my eyes, prayed, and remembered the sequence. The Bluetooth connected on my First Try.

God has given us His Holy Spirit. We don't need to "search" for Him because He is HERE.There is no need to seek "spiritual guidance" anywhere else.

He is Our Source, Our Teacher, Our Mentor, and Our Consolation.

And, as The Apostle John tells us in his letter, He Is A Gift.
