27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

Abba, Father Who Art in Heaven,
Blessed Be Your Holy Name!

One of my favorite movies, which used to appear occasionally on TV, was a film named "Quo Vadis". It was halfway between a Romance, a Religious Epic, and a "Sword and Sandals" movie that was a popular genre for that era. I really loved that genre, and although I never saw "Quo Vadis" in the theater, it was one of my TV Movie Faves (in glorious Black & White, interrupted every ten minutes with cigarette commercials). Along with "The Ten Commandments" and "The Wizard of Oz, I eagerly awaited the annual showing of "Quo Vadis".

It was only ten years ago that I read the actual Book from which the movie was derived. I was surprised that it was originally written in Polish. Currently, I am reading a new translation, and I am enjoying it very much.

The book covers a period of time that coincides with Today's Scripture Passage. Because Paul was a Roman Citizen, he had the Right to appeal his case to the Emperor himself. After years of sitting in jail in Caesarea, audiences with two different governors, the Sanhedrin, and even a king, he was getting nowhere with the "powers-that-be". The bureaucrats kept shunting him around from one jurisdiction to another, because nobody wanted to take responsibility. The Romans could see that Paul had done nothing against the Law, but they didn't want to "rock the boat". Finally, when Paul demands his Rights as a Citizen, they are more than happy to get rid of him and send him to Rome.

After shipwrecks, snake bites, hurricanes and other disasters, Paul finally arrives in Rome, placed under House Arrest ("Protective Custody") and awaits his audience with the Emperor. Good Luck with THAT. The Emperor is far too busy having orgies and killing his opponents to be bothered with Paul.

While in Custody, Paul is allowed to have visitors.One can assume that Luke, the Author of the Book of Acts, keeps him company, ministers to his needs, and gets the Letters out to the nascent churches that Paul had founded.

Members of the Jewish Community in Rome are curious about why Paul is under arrest, and visit him as well. When Paul explains why, he also preaches the Gospel. Some believe, some don't, and some think that Paul is just plain crazy.

The Book of Acts concludes with Paul's frustration as his message is not received very well. He quotes Scripture about people's eyes and ears being closed to the Truth.

However, Paul realizes that only The Holy Spirit can open eyes and ears, and soften hearts.

It is not Paul's eloquence, learning, or logic that convinces people. The Holy Spirit, The Spirit of Truth, Wisdom, Understanding, is also the Revealer of Mysteries. What doesn't make sense to the normal mind, suddenly becomes clear.

And so, the answer to the question "Quo Vadis?" (Where are you going?) can only be answered under the Inspiration of The Holy Spirit.
