Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father in Heaven,
Sanctified is Your Most Holy Name!
You Are Holy, Righteous and Just,
And Glorious in Majesty!
You Alone Are Worthy of Worship
For Your Alone Are The One True God.
Perfect in All Your Ways,
Almighty and Omnipresent,
You Are The GREAT I AM,
The Rock of Ages,
The Ancient of Days.
You Know the Beginning from the End,
And the End From the Beginning,
Because You ARE The Beginning and the End.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

Happy New Year!

One of the courses in seminary is called "Homiletics". That is the art and technique of preparing and delivering a Sermon. The word "Homily" means a sermon, and it is an important part of nearly every Type of Jewish or Christian Service, from the traditional liturgical services all the way to the most informal televangelist. A good sermon has a lot of elements that add up to a unified whole, and I remember reading somewhere that studies have shown that, if a sermon goes longer that 18 to 20 minutes without making its point, the audience begins to lose interest and attention fades.

Preaching "styles" can vary from the warm, "Country-boy" style to the fiery thunders of Fire-and-Brimstone, to the musical cadence of Southern Gospel music (interspersed with the Mighty Hammond B3 Organ chords), to a purely academic style of a professor expounding the Original Greek and Hebrew, to what is called (unfortunately) "Bible-Thumping.

My own "style" is reading the text, praying about it, and then being reminded of a personal memory that relates. Since I am in my mid-seventies, I have a LOT of stories, but I rely totally upon the Holy Spirit to bring them to mind and connect them to today's reading. Sometimes it works...sometimes not so much, and every once in a while, I veer into the academic thing, or I talk too long, or I get emotional! But there you go. I never took the Course in Homiletics 101, so one never knows what to expect.

When we come across a "sermon" in Scripture, we need to weigh carefully whether it is The Word of God, or a Spirit-Inspired retelling of an "uninspired" sermon. A perfect example of this would be the sermons of Job's (alleged) friends, as they pontificate over the reasons for Job's suffering. The Holy Spirit inspired the writer of Job to write down the exact words of their UN-inspired ramblings.

Another example would be the various threatening letters and speeches of the Assyrian Commander during the Siege of Jerusalem. King Hezekiah presented these threatening sermons to The Lord, and the Lord assured him that the words in the letter were NOT inspired. They were just bombastic battlefield boasting, and not to be taken as Truth.

While every word in the Bible is inspired, not everything that a person says in the Bible is from The Holy Spirit.

We have the perfect example of this in the Garden of Eden, where the Serpent asks:

"Did God Really Say That?"

And, of course, the rest is History.

How do we know when The Holy Spirit is speaking, or if it's just wishful thinking, boasting, or doubt in our own minds?

Today's Scripture, from the Old Testament, gives us a clue. First of all, there is the Historic Context. The Jews had been taken captive and exiled to Babylon. During the seventy years they were in Captivity, Babylon underwent several Palace Coups, and was conquered by The Medes and Persians. Cyrus, the Persian King, granted permission for the the Jews to go back home and rebuild their Temple. Nehemiah, who had been the "Cupbearer to the King" in Persia, was sent to supervise the rebuilding.

He encounters such devastation that he realizes that the first thing he has to do is to build a defensive wall around the city. The opposition, who were people who had moved in after the Jews were taken away, weren't happy about this return. They started attacking the builders, both physically, and with propaganda. The letters they wrote to the authorities contained lies and insults, all meant to stop construction on the wall.

The letters go back and forth, and the Bible faithfully reproduces them. Even though the text of these letters appear in the Bible, the words of the letters are not inspired by The Holy Spirit. But, because The Holy Spirit has inspired the Author of Nehemiah, we can now look back and see what was written. It's a fine line. How can we tell the difference?

Nehemiah gives us a clue in this Passage. here's the Quote again:

"Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst."

Along with "Instruction" comes "Nurturing". The Holy Spirit doesn't just tell us HOW to do His Will. He "Equips" us to do it. He will never give you a task without giving you the means to do His Will. He gives us Manna to eat and Water to sustain us in our Journey with Him.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open. (Mark 4:22)

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Psalm 35

Of David.

1 Contend, O Lord, with those who contend with me;
fight against those who fight against me!
2 Take hold of shield and buckler,
and rise up to help me!
3 Draw the spear and javelin
against my pursuers;
say to my soul,
‘I am your salvation.’

4 Let them be put to shame and dishonour
who seek after my life.
Let them be turned back and confounded
who devise evil against me.
5 Let them be like chaff before the wind,
with the angel of the Lord driving them on.
6 Let their way be dark and slippery,
with the angel of the Lord pursuing them.

7 For without cause they hid their net* for me;
without cause they dug a pit* for my life.
8 Let ruin come on them unawares.
And let the net that they hid ensnare them;
let them fall in it—to their ruin.

9 Then my soul shall rejoice in the Lord,
exulting in his deliverance.
10 All my bones shall say,
‘O Lord, who is like you?
You deliver the weak
from those too strong for them,
the weak and needy from those who despoil them.’

11 Malicious witnesses rise up;
they ask me about things I do not know.
12 They repay me evil for good;
my soul is forlorn.
13 But as for me, when they were sick,
I wore sackcloth;
I afflicted myself with fasting.
I prayed with head bowed* on my bosom,
14 as though I grieved for a friend or a brother;
I went about as one who laments for a mother,
bowed down and in mourning.

15 But at my stumbling they gathered in glee,
they gathered together against me;
ruffians whom I did not know
tore at me without ceasing;
16 they impiously mocked more and more,*
gnashing at me with their teeth.

17 How long, O Lord, will you look on?
Rescue me from their ravages,
my life from the lions!
18 Then I will thank you in the great congregation;
in the mighty throng I will praise you.

19 Do not let my treacherous enemies rejoice over me,
or those who hate me without cause wink the eye.
20 For they do not speak peace,
but they conceive deceitful words
against those who are quiet in the land.
21 They open wide their mouths against me;
they say, ‘Aha, Aha,
our eyes have seen it.’

22 You have seen, O Lord; do not be silent!
O Lord, do not be far from me!
23 Wake up! Bestir yourself for my defence,
for my cause, my God and my Lord!
24 Vindicate me, O Lord, my God,
according to your righteousness,
and do not let them rejoice over me.
25 Do not let them say to themselves,
‘Aha, we have our heart’s desire.’
Do not let them say, ‘We have swallowed you* up.’

26 Let all those who rejoice at my calamity
be put to shame and confusion;
let those who exalt themselves against me
be clothed with shame and dishonour.

27 Let those who desire my vindication
shout for joy and be glad,
and say evermore,
‘Great is the Lord,
who delights in the welfare of his servant.’
28 Then my tongue shall tell of your righteousness
and of your praise all day long.
