Our Father,
We Stand in Awe of Your Majesty.
You Alone Are Worthy of Worship,
For You Alone Are The One True God,
We Look To You For Deliverance,

It seems that every generation since the Early Church thought that they were in the "End Times". Christians were being persecuted, the Roman Emperors demanded that they be worshiped as gods, and, in 70AD, the Temple and Jerusalem were destroyed and the Jews dispersed. If anything qualified as "The End Of The World As We Know It", that did. There were even false teachers who claimed that Jesus had already returned, and had taken His Elect back to heaven with Him. Paul had to write a letter to the Thessalonian Church to assure them that it hadn't happened yet.

In Medieval Times, The Black Plague was interpreted as being one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and the Art of the period shows this belief. Still...no Second Coming.

During the Reformation, both sides of the conflict accused the other of being The Antichrist, and some partisans of both sides still argue that today.

In the New World, "The Second Great Awakening", brought about thousands of converts, but also gave birth to various sects that predicted the Immanent Second Coming of Jesus. Some of these sects foolishly set DATES for the Big Event, and, when Jesus didn't return, many people fell away from the faith. Interestingly enough, some of these sects still exist, and, even though they got it wrong, have expanded their influence worldwide. They seem to be counting on people's short memories of "The Great Disappointment".

Because of these extremes and disappointments, some theologians have scrapped the idea of "The End Times" entirely. They posit that the catastrophe of 70AD was the whole story as symbolized in The Book of Revelation, that Nero was the Antichrist, and that we shouldn't expect Jesus to return anytime soon. That position is called "Preterism, and is a view that is embraced by some very prominent Evangelical Scholars. I do not embrace that viewpoint, but I understand how they arrived at it. There have been so many wild and crazy guesses about The Second Coming, that it seems easier just to make everything an allegory and not ever get disappointed again.

In my own Spiritual Journey, I have seen people "set dates" and then look foolish when that date comes and nothing happens. That's because, in 1948AD something remarkable happened. The Modern State of Israel was born. Just like Isaiah said: "Can a Nation be born in a Day?" (Isaiah 66:8), Jews who had been dispersed for nearly two millennia came back to the Holy Land, as predicted in the Bible. Pictures from the Holocaust bore a startling resemblance to Ezekiel's Vision of the Dry Bones (Ez. 37), and people believed that the "End Time Clock" could start ticking again. Some teachers, unfortunately, forgot that Jesus said that "Nobody knows the Day or the Hour" (Matthew 24:36), and they started setting dates again.

Rather than get involved in a huge controversy, I will say that we should live each day as if Jesus is coming tomorrow, but not to neglect the present or the future for ourselves and our posterity.

Today's Passage tells us that The Holy Spirit has a warning for us. In the End Times, the "doctrines of demons" will proliferate. What could those "doctrines" be? There is a lot of stuff going on around the world that could qualify. My own take is that the "Doctrines of Demons" are not just the obvious ones: Communism, Fascism; The Occult, and so on, but are those things that target our very core. The target is the thing that makes each individual, person, animal, plant, or any other form of life, unique. It the the exquisite strands of God's Creation, His most beautiful Work of Art. It's what makes me, me, and you, you. It's what makes a man, a woman, a puppy, an orchid what they ARE. I can't even imagine that this thing could have evolved spontaneously, as it is too perfect. It's our DNA.

My simple advice is:

DON'T MESS WITH IT.
