There is a song my sister sings in concert called "The Story". The Artist singing the song is Brandi Carlisle, and I just assumed she wrote it. The story reminds me of my Mom who had wonderful stories, but we had all heard them so many times that we already knew all the endings. A new person in the home, be he a Podiatrist, A Visiting Nurse, an Electrician, or a kid delivering a Pizza was a fresh person to tell her stories to.

Just like Mom, I love telling my own stories. As the song says "The stories don't mean anything, if you got no one to tell them to..."

Maybe that's why I've been so devoted to this Thread for over 15 years. My stories would mean nothing if you weren't there to read them.

Just yesterday, a student of mine obtained the sheet music for this song. I looked at the Title and was surprised to see that the song was not written by the singer who had made it so famous. It was written by Phil Hanseroth, who, seems to have written it alone. Although Hanseroth and his brother are listed with Brandi Carlisle on other songs as a team, this one seems to have been a solo effort.

That caused me to think about other pop songwriting teams through the years.

A few nights ago, my Sister and I were playing Trivial Pursuit. I landed on "the pink wedge" and the question was "Who wrote the lyrics to Porgy and Bess?"

I immediately answered "DuBose Heyward", and my Sister said "WRONG! It's Ira Gershwin!"

I KNEW that wasn't right. Ira wrote the lyrics most of George's Popular songs, but the "book" for Porgy and Bess was based on a play by DuBose Heyward, as were most of the songs. While Ira may have contributed to the lyrics of the songs, the Opera is nearly always listed as being by George Gershwin and BuBose Heyward.

After I stood firm in my protest, my sister gave me another "Arts and Entertainment" question, which I REALLY did get wrong...so no pink wedge for me!

John Lennon and Paul McCartney were a Songwriting Team that dominated the second half of the 20th Century. But, not all of the Beatles' songs were written by the duo. Some were written by George Harrison, and even a few were written by Ringo. But if either John or Paul wrote a song, even if it were a solo effort, it was always credited to "Lennon & McCartney". It was in the Contract. After the partnership was dissolved, we began to hear the difference in their music. Paul was more pop-oriented, and was prone to silly love songs (what's wrong with that?), while John, untempered by Paul's sentimentality, managed to spew out all his anger from his difficult childhood into a whole separate body of work. In the case of The Beatles, it is my HUMBLE opinion that the whole was greater than the sum of its parts.

The opposite extreme of the solo singer-songwriter is the army of writers that appear beneath the Title of many of today's Pop Hits. I have counted as many as 10 "songwriters" on a piece of sheet music. Typically, the song is repetitive nonsense that has no depth whatsoever. It goes with the lines from "Peter and The Commissar" by Allan Sherman:

"We've all heard the saying which is true as well as witty,
That a Camel is a Horse that was designed by a Committee."

Now, all this talk about singers, songwriters, operas, committees, camels, and horses has to lead somewhere, and here it is.

The Bible was written over a period of 2000 years, by many authors. One would think that such a diverse group of writers over such a long period of time would produce something so disjointed, so scattered, so full of contradictions that it would be impossible to read at all.

And yet, it has survived another 2000 years, is the most translated book in History, and is read by millions of people every day. Even our calendar is determined by the events depicted in the Book. And yet, it has over 50 Authors? How can it be so consistent?

The clues to the Authorship appear all through Scripture. Here in the Old Testament, we read of The Holy Spirit comforting and giving a place of rest, even to the animals. This was in the context of Isaiah relating the Story of the Exodus, which had occurred hundreds of years before.

While the personality of the various authors of Scripture comes through, the Inspiration is always The Holy Spirit, weaving the various stories together with One Purpose, The Redemption of Humanity.

I loved The {Pilgrim’s Progress, esp[ecially tyhe allegorical names for the places Pilgrim visited.

There is even a magazine entitled “VANITY FAIR”, so the names in the Book are still with us to this day! :-)
