Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father in Heaven,
Magnified, Sanctified,
and Hallowed Be Your Most Holy and Glorious Name!
You Are So Holy and Worthy of Praise and Worship,
we are Overwhelmed by Your Glory!
It is You Who Have Made The Earth and All it Contains,
from the tiniest of Creatures,
to the Greatest of the Mountains,
Forests and Deserts.
It is You Who Command the Motion of the Stars,
The Galaxies,
and the Great Singularities of Time and Space,
And it is You Who Create new Life in the Secret Place of a Mother's Womb.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

Merry Christmas!

Perto Vallarta, in the Mexican State of Jalisco, was a different place in 1992 than it is today. Small hotels sat on a quiet little bay in the Pacific Ocean, and the Sierra Madre towered up behind the town. The mountains were home to People who lived the same way they did a Century ago, still did their laundry in the river, and rode mules to get to the market. Mike and I signed up for a horseback ride up the mountain to a waterfall, where we would refresh ourselves at a little cantina, and then ride back down. The trip would last all day, so we showed up early in the morning to get matched up with our horses.

A big, fat, loud American man named "Tom" was also choosing his horse for the day. He was bullying the Stable Boy (a Mexican Lad of about twelve) who was assisting us.

"I want the craziest, wildest horse you have here! I can handle ANY animal, and I want a lively one! Give me a horse called "El Diablo"!

"Senior, you need a large horse to carry your weight," the Boy replied.

"Are you saying I'm FAT? OK, give me a BIG lively horse. I want a challenge. I'm a Secret Service Agent and have served under FOUR Presidents! I want a GOOD Horse!"

At this declaration, Mike turned to me and snickered "Not so 'secret' anymore!" and I almost laughed out loud. It takes all kinds I guess.

Soon we were all saddled up, and we began to climb the mountain. It was amazing...Old Mexico, little Villages, Rain Forest, unlike anything I had experienced before. It took all morning to get to the Waterfall, where the Stable Boy took our horses for a drink, and we went into the Cantina for our lunch. Tom immediately hit the Tequila. As he drank more and more, he boasted about being a Secret Service Agent and gossiped about the Presidents he had served. He was getting really drunk and obnoxious, and the Trail Guide asked gently:

"Senior, we can get a JEEP (pronounced "HEEP") up here to take you to your hotel."

"HELL NO!" Tom bellowed. "Drunk or Sober, I can handle ANY animal! Get me my HORSE!"

We saddled up again, and began the descent, which is always more difficult that going UP the mountain. The trail seemed rockier, slantier, and more slippery. Nevertheless, the horses had done this trek many times before, and barely needed any guidance at all.

Just as we entered a tiny village of windowless adobe huts, Tom slid off his horse and came crashing to the ground, hitting his head on a rock, and bled profusely. Old women dressed in black came running out of the huts, Crossing themselves and wailing in Spanish : "He's DEAD He's DEAD!" This was long before people had cell phones, and we were at a loss as to what to do. The Stable Boy was beside himself with terror. This was a High Government Official From America! A Secret Service Agent Who Had Served Four American Presidents! And He's Dead! What Am I Going To Do?

Luckily, a Jeep happened by (WW2 Vintage) that was pulling a trailer full of fresh melons. The Farmer said he was on the way to the Town to bring the melons to market, and he would be happy to drop Tom off at the hospital on the way. We cleared out a space among the melons, and several of us hoisted Tom onto the trailer. He was still unconscious as the Jeep bounced away down the mountain.

The following day, the entire group went to visit Tom in the hospital. He had a band-aid on his head and the worst hangover in history. We were so relieved that he wasn't dead, but we were convinced that he wasn't really a Secret Service Agent.

Years later, I was watching a talk show, when the host announced that he was having a special guest, a Secret Service Agent who had served under FOUR Presidents. It was Tom! He went on to tell a Heroic Tale about how he led a tour group to safety when they got lost in the Sierra Madre Mountains in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. It seems that someone in the group had too much Tequila, fallen off his horse, and needed Medical Assistance, which he supplied, due to his superior training and expertise.

A first, I was LIVID. That's NOT how it happened. Then I just laughed. Truth is Truth and Lies are Lies, and even if only a few people know the Truth, it's still Truth no matter what anybody else says.

The Holy Spirit is a Person Who can experience Grief. The things that cause this grief are the things that are opposite to the Fruits of the Holy Spirit:

Goodness vs Evil
Truth vs Lies
Gentleness vs Cruelty
Hope vs Despair
Forgiveness vs Bitterness,
Peace vs War
And so on.

Just the little bit of "grief" I experienced at Tom's lies was a minuscule portion of what The Holy Spirit feels when we cause Him to be grieved.

We obey God's law, not because we are "Under the Law" but because we don't want Him to be grieved.

We love Him because He first loved US.

Psalm 140

To the leader. A Psalm of David.

1 Deliver me, O Lord, from evildoers;
protect me from those who are violent,
2 who plan evil things in their minds
and stir up wars continually.
3 They make their tongue sharp as a snake’s,
and under their lips is the venom of vipers.
Selah

4 Guard me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked;
protect me from the violent
who have planned my downfall.
5 The arrogant have hidden a trap for me,
and with cords they have spread a net;*
along the road they have set snares for me.
Selah

6 I say to the Lord, ‘You are my God;
give ear, O Lord, to the voice of my supplications.’
7 O Lord, my Lord, my strong deliverer,
you have covered my head in the day of battle.
8 Do not grant, O Lord, the desires of the wicked;
do not further their evil plot.*
Selah

9 Those who surround me lift up their heads;*
let the mischief of their lips overwhelm them!
10 Let burning coals fall on them!
Let them be flung into pits, no more to rise!
11 Do not let the slanderer be established in the land;
let evil speedily hunt down the violent!

12 I know that the Lord maintains the cause of the needy,
and executes justice for the poor.
13 Surely the righteous shall give thanks to your name;
the upright shall live in your presence.
