I keep thinking that I will be wrapping up this series on The Holy Spirit in time for the New Year, but every morning I find a New Scripture about Him. This will probably continue well into 2025. As I have mentioned before, I have my own Scripture Reading Program that includes both the Old and New Testaments. While I am expecting references to The Holy Spirit in the New Testament, I am often caught by surprise by references to Him in the Old. Today's Scripture Portion is one that I just discovered in Isaiah 63, a Passage I have probably read hundreds of times. The Bible is like that...New Every Morning, like the Steadfast Love of Our Father in Heaven (Lamentations 3).

Come to think of it, I might NEVER be able to "end" this Series. I keep finding New Things.

At no time does either Testament indicate that The Holy Spirit is a mere "Force", like in Star Wars. That is a concept that is closer to the Chinese concept of Qi, and is NOT a Judeo-Christian concept. As for me, the only use for "Qi" is in SCRABBLE, and is really good if you can put it on a "Triple Word Score"...that's 33 POINTS! So, while "Qi" is a legitimate word in the SCRABBLE Dictionary, it is NOT a description of The Holy Spirit.

Another unfortunate theory about The Holy Spirit is that He is a "feminine principle." The only clue that might support this theory is in Proverbs, when Solomon ascribes female characteristics to Wisdom. We have learned that Wisdom (Sophia) is a Gift of the Holy Spirit, not The Holy Spirit Himself. I might use this opportunity that Solomon also personifies Folly, Morality, and Adultery as Women, so "Sophia" is obviously a Poetic Device.

So, the Holy Spirit isn't a Force, or a Woman, or a "Thing". God has chosen to use Male pronouns to describe Himself, so shouldn't we respect that? I guess I'm no scholar!

Today's Scripture (from the O.T.) says that the Holy Spirit is vexed by the faithlessness of His People. The word for "vexed" in more Modern Translations is "grieved". A "Force" or an "Energy Field" can't be grieved. Grief is a uniquely Personal Experience. We can't even understand our own Grief, much less the Grief of others. How can we possibly understand the Grief of Our Creator that happens when we sin against Him?

This incredible Old Testament Revelation about The Holy Spirit is revisited in the New Testament, which we will explore tomorrow.

Thank you for today’s devotional.

My 85-year-old Pastor often reminded the congregation that HOLY SPIRIT is a person. We should address Him as such and omit “the” when speaking to Him. HOLY SPIRIT is His Name.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem in these perilous times. May GOD’s people know the joy of being indwelled with HOLY SPIRIT when they believe in the LORD JESUS CHRIST.
