When I was eleven, my Piano Teacher gave me tickets to The Children's Concerts at Boston Symphony Hall. It was right down the street from Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, and across from New England Conservatory, in the Heart of the Campus of Northeastern University. To this day it amazes me that my girlfriends and I were allowed to take a bus and a trolley to get there. This was "INTOWN" and required nice attire as if "intown" was someplace special. Symphony Hall WAS special, so we got all dolled up for our adventures.

Usually, the concerts were conducted by Harry Ellis Dickson, the Concertmaster at the time. It was usually easily accessible Classical Music, like"A Young Person's Guide To The Orchestra", or "Peter And The Wolf", you know, the "Kiddie Classics".

I loved these concerts and never missed a Saturday.

There was one Saturday that was special. Not only were we going to have The Boston Symphony, but the New England Conservatory Choir was going to be onstage with Guest Conductor Leonard Bernstein.

A lot has been said about Leonard Bernstein, but what is not mentioned as much is what a Wonderful Teacher he was. He made the music come alive with stories and illustrations.

He introduced this final piece and said that when the King of England first heard it, he rose to his feet in respect. Since the King had stood up, everybody in the hall stood up too. Now, he continued, it is a Tradition that the whole audience stand up when this is played.

Well, OK. I was used to standing up after a performance, but not during a performance.

Then the Maestro said:

"You can sing along too. The Words are in your Program, on the last page."

Then, he turned around facing the Orchestra and the Choir, and tapped his baton. The giant organ that takes up a whole wall behind the stage played the opening strains. We all leaped to our feet, just as the Choir and Orchestra EXPLODED in Sound.

HALLELUJAH! HALLELUJAH!

It was my Introduction to Handel's Messiah, and I'll never forget it.

For the last 40 years, I've been a bit of a "maniac" about Handel's Messiah. I have several CD's by different conductors, go to local performances, sing along with the Choruses, and have done a Bible Study on the Scriptures in the Oratorio more than once on this Thread. I am lulled to sleep by it on my bedside alarm clock that is also a CD Player (Trevor Pinnock Version), and play it on my Living Room Stereo when I'm preparing this Thread every morning (Mariner Version CD). I always look forward to the Christmas Eve posting of The Hogwood Version by our FRiend Publius. On You Tube, I have watched several Versions, and really enjoyed the exuberance of This One.

Last Night, at a Family Gathering for Christmas Eve, My Sister Chris handed me a package. From its shape, I knew it was either a Vinyl Recod Album or a Calendar (with Puppies on it!). I opened it, and it was an album, but it was just a blank white cover. Was it the Beatles? Then I flipped it over and saw the title. It was Handel's Messiah! My first Vinyl Record of it. I looked to see who the Conductor was.

It was Leonard Bernstein!

As I ate Breakfast and began preparing for Today's Thread, I played the records. It took four sides.

I texted my Sis immediately:

LEONARD NAILED IT!

It brought me back to Symphony Hall and my first encounter with The Hallelujah Chorus.

I still stand up when I hear it performed.

. . . the first encounter. How we pray for those whose first encounter of the LORD was glorious. May they grow in the grace and knowledge of the LORD. How we pray for those whose first encounter somehow was tainted by a judging and condemning attitude, may they find Mercy and Grace. Giving thanks to GOD for HIS GREAT LOVE and REDEEMING MERCY that saved a wretch like me. Although I came to Him with shame and sorrow, my first encounter was that of compassion. HALLELUJAH!
