I spent a sleepless night, concerned about Tippy. We had been visiting, and she had found some wrapped Christmas gifts that were stored on the floor. One of these gift bags contained a whole bag of KIT-KAT Candy Bars, and Tippy surreptitiously gobbled up the whole bag, wrappers and all. I stared in horror at the empty bag, and envisioned a mad run to the All-Night Veterinary ER, about six miles away. My sister, a friend, and I theorized the worst, based upon the horror stories on the Internet about Dogs and Chocolate. Meanwhile, Tippy was putting on her very best "I'M SO SORRRRRRRY" Dog Routine, grovelling, paws up, grinning sheepishly, you know, the whole dance. We weren't concerned about replacing the Christmas Candy, we just wanted to be sure Tippy was going to be OK.

I took her home and stayed up late watching her carefully for any signs of a reaction. She played for a while with her toys, and then retired to her crate for a good night's sleep. This morning, she woke me up at 5:30AM, demanding her walk (17 Degrees Fahrenheit this morning). I bundled up like an Astronaut and watched her carefully. She had a normal walk, with all the normal things dogs do on walks. My take on this is that there isn't even enough REAL chocolate in a whole bag of KIT-KATS to cause a reaction. Actually, they are mostly AIR. (Thank Goodness!)

I get most of my songwriting ideas when I am walking the dog. I also get ideas for each day's thread. Today, knowing what the Scripture passage might be, I concocted this Parable:

A group of powerful Billionaires who were seeking World Domination gathered together to discuss the biggest obstacle to their ambitions: The United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights. As long as the Citizens of that Country believed that they had certain Rights guaranteed, it would be next to impossible to rule over them. They decided that it all hinged upon the People's belief in the First Ten Amendments, and so they attacked them one-by-one, using very reasonable arguments.

The Second Amendment was about the Right to Bear Arms, they argued, but that was back in the 18th Century, where there were wild animals and hostile Indians, and no decent Law Enforcement to protect people. Besides, weapons were quite primitive, flintlocks and muskets and so on, and you actually had to have two opposing front teeth to operate a gun like that (required for tearing open a paper cartridge with only one hand). There were no AR-15's, Semi-Automatic Pistols, or Nuclear Bombs back then. They call this "Reasonable Gun-Control", but the argument falls on its face when compared to the other Rights guaranteed by the Document.

Take for example, Freedom of the Press, stated in the First Amendment. At the time, "The Press" meant exactly that...NEWS and Opinions produced on a Printing Press, an invention that was about 300 years old at the time. Before the Printing Press was invented, everything had to be written and copied by hand. But does this mean that NEWS and Opinions are only protected IF they are produced on a Printing Press? Or does Freedom of the Press also include TV and Radio, Internet and Telephone Calls, Text Messages and Blog Posts?

The Billionaires had to cook up an analogy that would serve them in both of these Amendments. What they boiled it down to is the familiar phrase : "Peace and Safety". If they could convince the Public that even expressing an opinion was an "Act of Violence", then they could control the output of Speech, News Reporting, and Self-Expression. "Safety" became the catchword. "I Don't Feel Safe" became enough to get a place boycotted, closed, or a person fired. The FBI swoops in because someone saw a garage-door opener as a hangman's noose, and all hell breaks loose. A cry goes up to ban "Assault Weapons", but, any weapon used to assault someone (like a car or a hammer) can be classified as an "Assault Weapon".

With this in mind, the Billionaires decided that the first "Right" they had to destroy was Freedom of Speech. Soon, names for things began to change, good things became bad and bad things became good. Common Sense was "Politically Incorrect", and people were bankrupted, arrested, and incarcerated for merely exercising what they THOUGHT had been guaranteed in the Constitution. It was really starting to look like the Bad Guys were going to win.

Who would be the Eyewitness, the One Who saw all these things going on and wasn't afraid to call it out? Who was going to show, not only with words and actions, what was happening beneath the surface? Who was going to tear the lid off the whole thing, and reveal what had been concealed for so long?

OK...that's my Parable for today. Or maybe, just maybe, it's a true story. I'll let YOU decide.

In Today's Scripture passage, The Holy Spirit is called "The Witness". He bears witness to the Truth of Christ, as He is The Spirit of Truth. This Passage is particular, though, and says that He bears Witness to His Gifts, specifically Signs, Wonders, and Miracles.

This causes a problem, since we don't see a lot of miracles these days. Well, maybe we DO, but are hesitant to label them as such, because we are so modern and "enlightened".

There are some excellent, erudite, Bible Scholars who have large followings, who have become disgusted with the overemphasis of some preachers towards the Gifts of the Spirit. While these teachers believe the Bible for everything else, they draw the line at Modern-Day Miracles. Meanwhile, the other end of the spectrum includes those who FAKE miracles in order to draw in a huge following and rake in the bucks.

May I venture to suggest that the teachers who say that all the Gifts have ceased are doing it out of a sincere desire for "Safety"? The Charlatans who fake miracles certainly are dangerous to people as individuals and to Christianity as a whole. Are they depriving themselves and others of the Fullness of The Holy Spirit to keep us all safe from the wicked heretics who are faking it for sordid gain?

The Bible, like the Bill of Rights, says what it says. Sometimes, the exercise of these rights (or Gifts!) present a danger. Are we going to limit The Bill of Rights to its own Century's Muskets and Printing Presses? Are we going to limit The Holy Spirit to the time of the Apostles? Or is it for "Ourselves and Our Posterity", or as Peter said on the Day of Pentecost:

"39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call." (Acts 2:39)
