Dear Father in Heaven,
How Perfect You Are!
You Alone Are The One True God,
King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
When My Heart Is Overwhelmed,
I Run To You,
My Rock and My Fortress,
My Stronghold and My High Tower.
You Are My Rock.
Permanent, Eternal, Strong and Protecting.

Let all that has been Concealed

When I was eight years old, I had a HUGE crush on JFK. It may have been that my family was Irish, lived in Boston, and that we had relatives who worked for the Kennedys in Hyannis. I followed the 1960 Election, complete with Televised Debates, and actually got into a fist fight with the Neighborhood Bully who happened to be a Nixon Supporter. (I won that fight, but was severely punished. The Bully, Judy, got away with it.)

I watched everything about JFK on our fuzzy Black-and-White TV Set, and committed the best parts of his speeches to memory (along with Gilbert and Sullivan Operas, but that's a whole different story!)

I was appalled when the Soviet Union erected a Wall dividing Berlin, separating families and just being total Communist Jerks about it.

Imagine my inspiration when JFK went there and declared "Ich bin ein Berliner"

Since JFK wasn't a Native German-Speaker, a joke emerged later on that he had ended up saying "I am a Jelly Donut", after a pastry that was popular in Berlin at the time. (kind of like mistaking a Napoleon Pastry with the French Leader). The rumor has persisted for years, but The Smithsonian and others say it ain't so.

A less apocryphal mistranslation occurred in 1977, with a Language that is even harder than German to get right. President Jimmy Carter gave a speech in Poland, and what was supposed to be "I have always loved the Polish People's energy" came out as "I have always lusted after the Polish People." The speech was met with confused silence. Since Carter had mentioned "lust" in an unfortunate Playboy interview back during the Election, the mistranslation compounded the bizarre effect.

I did something similar in 1984. Having learned Basic Hebrew from a cassette tape with a Male Narrator, I was using all Masculine endings in my Conversational Hebrew. This was causing some raised eyebrows when I attempted to say anything, until, finally, a kind waiter in a little Coffee Shop on the Via Dolorosa corrected me. Since I have been a Female all my Life, and still am, I see it as what we now call a "Teachable Moment".

Mistranslations, Unfortunate Interpretations, and Outright Deception can plague Bible Study, if one is relying on one's own prejudices and personal experiences. Paraphrases of Scripture often contain a ideological slant that pushes a particular agenda. While a Paraphrase may be easier to read, a Translation will be more accurate, by it's very nature. What's a honest student of Scripture to do?

Scripture itself gives us the answer. The Holy Spirit is our Interpreter. The Bible is emphatic that "spiritual" matters are outside of our experience, and need to be "spiritually discerned". Without the Holy Spirit, reading Scripture would be like trying to carve a Diamond with a Butter Knife.

While a Butter Knife works fine with a Jelly Donut...it's useless for a Diamond.
