Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our God and Our King,
You are the tender Shepherd Who Leads us.
You do not Drive us from behind.
You bring us to green fields of Abundance,
And refresh us with clear, cool water.
We ask You To Restore the Soul of America,
And lead us in paths of Righteousness for Your Name's sake.
And even though we face disease, distrust, polarization, and despair
And find we are wandering further into the Valley of Death,
We know that you are with us.
We gladly accept the discipline of Your Rod,
Because we know that the Leadership and Authority of your Staff Will indeed lead us home to safety.
Our enemies surround us,
But You identify them and anoint us to stand tall.

Before I was able to make my living doing Music Full Time, I had a bunch of "Real Jobs", each one worse than the one before it. Perhaps one of the worst was that of the Bookkeeper in a Chain Jewelry Store in a Mall. I had no experience in Accounting and hated Math so it was the "perfect" job for me. UGH! Since the Store had its own system, I was soon reconciling the Books and walking to the Bank in the mall every night to make the Deposit. (For the Record, I never got mugged, but I was a perfect target.) All through the Summer and Autumn, I tallied up the Day's Receipts, Counted the Layaways, and Credit Card Purchases, Added Up and put all the Diamonds into the safe, and reconciled all the numbers before I locked up the Shop, Pulled Down the Grate, and walked to the Bank with the Cash. (I know. This would NEVER be a safe thing in today's world). I never had a shortage or an overage, and I began to take Pride in my work as a "Diamond Merchant". I could quote "The Five C's", Help a young man buy the Appropriate Engagement Ring for his Fiancee within his budget, and even do a little "pre-marriage counseling" from behind the counter. Allen, my obnoxious boss, quickly suppressed my new interests in the Diamond Trade, probably because he was so abrasive that he turned people off, and sometimes would lose a sale because of it.

"JUST DO THE BOOKS!" he growled. "And make sure the numbers always reconcile!"

(Sigh). OK. I could do that. So I sat at my desk and watched Allen insult one customer after another, trying to upsell lovestruck couples into spending more money than they could afford for an engagement ring.

Christmas Season got crazy. Lots of guys like to give an Engagement ring as a Christmas Present, and pretty soon there was a line out the door. I offered to help Allen with the Sales, but he rebuffed me. "JUST DO THE BOOKS!"

One day, after everybody left, I was faced with numbers that didn't add up, an a huge cash deposit. I put all the diamonds in the safe, closed up the shop, pulled down the grate, and walked to the bank with over $5000.00 in a zipper bag. I figured I could take the Books home with me, and find the error overnight, and thus, reconcile the numbers before Allen got in the next day.

After successfully depositing the cash, I drove home and lay on the floor under the Christmas Tree, with the Books spread out before me. No matter how many times I added, subtracted, separated Credit Card payments from Layaways, Compared, Contrasted, etc, etc, I still came up with a shortage of $3,999.95, the List Price of the biggest, most beautiful Diamond in the Store. I stayed up till 3:00AM under the Christmas Tree, weeping because I could NOT reconcile the Books.

I dreaded going to work the next day. I knew Allen would blame me for the Shortage. I also knew that I was not supposed to bring the Books home with me, so there was that too. I was genuinely scared at what might happen to me.

I opened the store, and sat there waiting for Allen to swagger in. He was a little late, so that made me even more apprehensive.

Finally he arrived, looking like a whipped puppy. He was pale as a ghost, and seemed like he was about to get sick.

Before I could say anything about the Books not reconciling, he went on a tirade:

"You know that guy that was looking at the Big Diamond? He palmed it and replaced it with a YAG. I brought it home so I could make sure. Yup...It's a WORTHLESS PIECE OF $%&#!

He threw the junk ring onto my desk, sat down and buried his face in his hands.

"What am I gonna do? That's gonna come out of MY Commission!"

I patted his head and comforted him, knowing that he could afford the Ring, but not the Humiliation of being Flim-Flammed. I silently handed him the Books, picked up the fake ring, and said;

"That's a Beautiful Imitation, Allen. It could have fooled anybody. It's not your fault."

He NEVER gave me a hard time after that.

A YAG is an Old-Fashioned Counterfeit. CZ's are even a better Counterfeit Diamond, and now, REAL Diamonds can be grown in a Laboratory. The only difference is that the Lab-Grown Diamonds didn't take millions of years in the earth to form. Yet, there is something about a REAL Diamond that has made it symbolic of a Lifetime Commitment, and Exclusive Relationship, and True Love. When a Girl gets an Engagement Ring, it's a Big Event, and she can't wait to show everybody. It's the Seal, the Promise, the Down Payment on a Beautiful Future.

Like Real Diamonds, though, there can be Counterfeits. The most effective Counterfeits are the ones that LOOK like the Real Thing. In our Churches Today, there are a number of people claiming to be especially "Gifted" by The Holy Spirit. The criteria for Discernment are that same as for Prophets:

1. Does it come to pass exactly as the person said?

2. Does it agree with God's Word?

and

3. To WHOM goes the Glory?

Don't Accept Any Countefeits!
