Abba, Father!
Blessed is Your Holy Name!

King of The Universe,
Mighty and Glorious,
Eternal,

and Almighty!

Every day, as I walked to and from school, I went by THE HOUSE. It was a Typical 1920's Craftsman Style Two Family, Chocolate Brown with White Trim. In front, next to the walkway, was a perfectly trimmed pine tree shaped like an umbrella. We kids called it "The Umbrella Tree House", and we used it as a Landmark when giving directions. The "Umbrella Tree" grew a little bit more every year, but always had its shape maintained.

In the Early 1970's, I happened to walk by the "Umbrella Tree House" and saw a FOR SALE sign in the window. I told my husband of three years that I Wanted That House! and we contacted the Realtor whose name was on the sign.

The Realtor, whose name was Mike, told us we had to come up with $1000.00 "Earnest Money" in order to put an offer on the house. It could be split up: $500.00 with the offer, and another $500.00 with the signing of the Purchase and Sale Agreement.

Now, at the time, I was gainfully employed, but my husband was still in College. In those days, a married couple had to get a Mortgage under the Husband's name, and the wife's income wasn't even considered. But I REALLY wanted that Umbrella Tree House, so I asked my in-laws if there was any "Bar Mitzvah Money" in an account somewhere. Yes, yes there was. But it was in a Trust Fund that my college-age husband wasn't allowed to touch till he turned 30, and we wanted the Umbrella Tree House NOW.

Abe, my Father-In-Law, came out to look at the house, and since he was also the owner of a Chocolate Brown Craftsman Style Two Family in Greater Boston, he LOVED the House and released the funds for its Purchase.

We were able to make the Deposit, pay a substantial Down Payment, and secure a Mortgage for the remaining Purchase Price.

We lived in that House for nine years, and always kept the Umbrella Tree trimmed so that it looked like it did when I was a child.

In 1985, we sold the house, and bought a Single Family in Hyde Park. We engaged Mike The Realtor, because he had been so helpful and knowledgeable the first time around. He had walked us through buying our first house, and we trusted him.

The first thing the new Owners did once we passed papers was CUT DOWN the Umbrella Tree. I felt awful about it, but Mike explained that once the Property changes hands, it's no longer yours. It belongs to the person who paid the price.

In Today's Reading, we have left the Book of Acts and are looking at a Letter Paul wrote to the Church in Corinth. Paul had the Mind of a Lawyer. He understood the Law, both Religious and Secular, and he knew his Rights as a Citizen. As we saw in The Book of Acts, he often used the intricacies of Roman Law to defend himself, and actually got a beating stopped when he declared his Citizenship.

When arguing with Religious Leaders, he spoke in terms relating to Religious Law. He was at home in either situation.

In this letter (and also in Ephesians) Paul describes The Holy Spirit as "The Earnest". Another word for "Earnest" is "Guarantee", "Pledge" or even "Down Payment". Like the Trust Fund of Bar Mitzvah Money, the Holy Spirit is a Guarantee of Our Inheritance in Heaven, Eternal Life with God. It is the Seal of God on a Believer, Purchased by Jesus with His Own Blood.

I looked up the house on line, and it is now two Million-Dollar Condos.

Maybe I should have hung onto it....but no. I have a Greater Treasure in Heaven, and I have the Down Payment right here.
