Over 50 years ago, my husband had a friend named Malchus. I had never heard that name before, and thought that his parents had made it up. A decade later, I came across the name in the New Testament...Malchus was the Servant of the High Priest whose ear had been cut off by Peter in the Garden of Gethsemane. And, even though He was being arrested at the time, Jesus restored the ear of the servant of his enemy. So, the parents of my husband's friend didn't make it up at all, but had gotten the name from one little reference in the Gospel.

Something similar happened when my Sister introduced me to her Pastor, who happened to be from Ghana in Africa. His name was Agabus. I had never heard the name before, and just figured it was African in origin. It sounded a little like Latin, but the Ancient Romans had conquered large portions of Northern Africa and maybe left some Latin names behind. It wasn't until I started reading the Book of Acts, that Agabus jumped out at me. Like Malchus, Agabus was a Bible Character.

Today we are introduced to the Bible Agabus, and see that he is a Prophet. Unlike some of the other characters in the Book of Acts, he is a Prophet of God, and doesn't use occult means to "read" the future. (We already met Simon the Sorcerer and soon will meet other characters in Acts who claim this talent, which comes either from fraud or demonic possession)

Agabus is clearly speaking under the influence of The Holy Spirit when he warns of a coming Famine. The response of the New Believers is to make preparations and take up a collection to be able to help people in need when the time comes.

There are extremes on both ends of the argument about whether the Holy Spirit speaks through Prophets in the Present Day. Some say that ALL Prophecy ceased with the Death of the Last Apostle John, or, perhaps, with the Completion of the Canon of Scripture (Which Books were in and which were out). These Teachers are called "Cessessionists", and mostly base their opinions on the antics of People on the other end of the Spectrum.

The other extreme is a segment of Christianity that is more concerned with the gifts than with The Giver. These Self-Appointed "Prophets" make loud predictions that don't come true, and then embarrass the Church with their Narcissism and Hubris.

Just because the Extremes are unseemly doesn't mean the The Holy Spirit has ceased to be Present among Believers. It just means that there are always going to be people who go to Extremes.

Agabus is a beautiful example of a Prophet who is sensitive to the guidance of The Holy Spirit, and speaks the Word of God to his brethren. He warns of a coming famine, so they can DO something about it. His prophecy in no way contradicts Scripture or the Will of God. He doesn't predict the Famine to cause Panic or even to manipulate people.

A perfect example of the proper response to prophecy would be what has happened recently in our Southeastern States. Large Charitable Organizations like Samaritan's Purse and Operation Blessing were made aware of the Path of Hurricane Helene. They mobilized and prepared relief vehicles to be ready when it happened. Helene was worse than anyone could have imagined, and these two organizations (Along with President-Elect Trump and Rev. Franklin Graham) were first on the scene in Georgia, and later, Asheville, NC. While the prediction had come from the Weather Service and not from a Prophet, the response was similar to that of Agabus's Congregation 2000 years ago.

If all a "prophecy" does is scare the pants off a person, get free publicity, or even flatter somebody, it's NOT from The Holy Spirit. However If a Prophecy is in line with The Word of God, agrees with God's Character, Comes True (that's REALLY important), then it may be from The Holy Spirit.

Also, the BIG question is:

"To WHOM is the Glory for the Prophecy being given" To God? Or to the "Prophet"?
