13 Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.

2 As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.

3 And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.

4 So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus.

Our Father In Heaven,
Magnified and Sanctified is Your Most Holy Name!
You Alone Are Worthy To Be Praised And Worshiped,
For Your Alone Are Holy,

Steve, my Bass Teacher, was a "Musician's Musician". He could play anything, it seemed, on any Instrument. I was so conflicted when he announced that he got the "Gig of a Lifetime", a Six-Week Cruise on the Mediterranean on a Brand New Luxury Cruise Ship. I was so happy for him, but it meant a big gap in my Bass Lessons, and I didn't want another teacher. Also, I have to admit I was a wee bit jealous!

He showed me the Itinerary: Israel, Turkey, Greece, Crete, and Italy.

"Wow! That's looks like Paul and Barnabas!" I exclaimed.

Steve looked at me, a little puzzled.

"Friends of yours?" he asked.

That gave me an opportunity to share what I knew about my favorite Book in the Bible...The Book of Acts.

I've lost touch with Steve over the years, but I've heard that he's very active in Nashville.

What was, in the early 21st Century, a "Luxury Cruise", with Excellent Musicians, Health Spas, World-Class Cuisine, Sunny Days on Deck and Romantic Moonlit Nights, was a LOT different in the First Century AD. Paul and Barnabas were taking their lives into their hands getting on a frail sailing craft and making such a journey. Although the Mediterranean isn't as big as the Atlantic, it's still commands respect. The sudden squalls, rough seas, and rocky shallows can totally crush the little ships, destroying all life on board. To undertake a journey like this without being an experienced seaman must have been daunting.

Paul and Barnabas took the Great Commission very seriously, and it was the Holy Spirit Who empowered them to do what seemed to be a Herculean Effort.

Since we have no evidence that either of them was a Musician, they probably had to pay for their passage as well.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
