(Interpreter of Scripture) Acts 8:27-35

25 And they, when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.

26 And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.

27 And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,

28 Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.

29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.

30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?

31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.

32 The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:

33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.

34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?

35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.

36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?

37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

Tippy's Morning Walk is usually 3-4 Miles along a main road with a sidewalk on only one side of the street. Naturally, I live on the OTHER side, which means that, at some point I need to cross a Two-Lane Highway that goes to Boston. Usually, our walk occurs before the Morning Commute begins in earnest. There are two sets of crossing lights, one of them near me, and the other about a mile down the road, at a busy intersection.

The two miles South are relatively easy at the crosswalks. However, the trip home can sometimes get a little dicey.

On the way home, the light at the busy intersection is quite advanced, with a crossing light (a walking figure of a man), Red Lights in all directions, and a very visible crosswalk. The Crossing light makes a sound as it counts off the seconds one has to get across the street, and several blinking lights that alert traffic that there is a pedestrian in the crosswalk.

Massachusetts has a "Right on Red" Law that permits motorists to take a Right Turn at a Red Light, but ONLY if:

1. The vehicle comes to a full stop before making the turn.
2. Can only turn if there are no cars coming in either direction on the intersecting street,

and most importantly,

3. There are NO pedestrians in the crosswalk!

Since my back is to the Right-Turn-Takers and I am hearing impaired, I don't see or hear the Right-On-Red-Takers that don't stop like they are supposed to. I have had to jump back onto the sidewalk as I am attempting to cross the street. I now understand an epithet describing Massachusetts Drivers that I will not repeat here.

I can't understand why these drivers don't see me and my dog, crossing legally, on a well-lit street with all kinds of traffic controls and signals, Red Lights in both directions, crosswalks, and an unobstructed view of the Pedestrian "WALK" signal. What's going on?

The last time this happened, I caught the driver's eye. She was Texting, Drinking Coffee, and Driving, all at the same time. Not only was she breaking all the Crosswalk Laws, The Right-On-Red Laws, and the Texting-While-Driving Laws, she was setting herself up to ruin her life (and the life of her family) by potentially being convicted of Vehicular Homicide, if she had struck me and Tippy. Did she really want that as her destiny? I jumped back, pointed at the crossing light, and shouted out to her the numbers on her license plate. She mouthed "Sorry" and kept on going. I was so shook up, I forgot the numbers on her tag, and never reported it. It kind of ruined my morning walk. I wish there was another place that was safer to cross, but even more so, I wish people would obey the law when driving.

Today's reading is one of my favorite incidents in the Book of Acts. The Ethiopian Eunuch was a servant of the Queen of Ethiopia, and seemed that he had a high position as Minister of Finance for her kingdom. In those days, a eunuch could advance through the ranks more easily because there was no fear that he would usurp the kingdom and start his own dynasty. This man had attained so much prestige that he was able to make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem in his search for Truth and Spiritual fulfillment.

Philip had no idea this Seeker was in town. In fact, the Ethiopian was on his way home when The Holy Spirit directed Philip to meet up with him on the road.

As Philip approached the Chariot, he heard the Ethiopian reading out loud (One Hopes that he had someone else doing the driving!). He was reading the words, but didn't understand to Whom they were referring. Like some Hebrew Scholars, the Ethiopian mused that, perhaps Isaiah was referring to himself, or the People of Israel, or somebody Else who was suffering like a Lamb to the Slaughter.

The chariot was pulled over and stopped, and Philip climbed on board. He explained, from the text we now call "Isaiah 53", that the Prophet was speaking of Jesus The Messiah.

The Ethiopian, enlightened by The Holy Spirit, asked to be Baptized.

There are Christians in Ethiopia to this very day, and many claim their heritage traces back to The Minister of Finance who shared the Good News as soon as he got home.

That kind of "Texting While Driving" I can get behind.
