Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem (11/21/24)[Prayer]

14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:

15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:

17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.

18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,

Two Thousand years of Church History have been unkind to Simon the Sorcerer. The Established Church even named a Serious Sin after him: "Simony". Even though this was considered an evil thing to do, it went on quite a lot, and does so to this day. Even if it's a Big Donation to the Building Fund in order to get Spiritual Authority, or an actual payoff to get a Promotion in a Church's Hierarchy, Simony is still going on

Once again, I am not picking on any one religion with regards to this. You see it all across denominational lines. Wherever there is Power, there is going to be people who are willing to spend Money to get it. And, wherever there is Money, there will be someone willing to sell their Soul for it.

Scholars have debated for two Millennia as to whether Simon was ever a believer at all. They posit that Simon's heart was so darkened by his dabbling in the Occult that he was "Irredeemable". (He would have to be, if they were going to name a Sin after him!) Yet, the Book of Acts states that "he believed and was baptized". Was he just putting on an act? I think the clue comes when Simon responds to Peter's rebuke:

Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me.

He was asking Peter to pray for him...would an Unbeliever has done that? One hopes that Simon was given an opportunity to repent, maybe get a new job that didn't use sorcery, and become a part of the Community of Believers. Too bad they named a Sin after him.

The Question remains, however, as to what was it that Simon saw, that he thought he could purchase, in the first place? He was the established "Miracle Worker" in the Community, and probably had some standing. Then these guys come into town and started Healing People without the Mumbo-Jumbo and Stage Props. Not only that, but when the newcomers placed their hands upon people, Something happened. Was it the manifestation of the Gifts of the Spirit, such as Tongues and Prophesy, that came gushing forth at the Laying On Of Hands? Was it the Sheer Joy and Love that exhibited itself as these New Believers experienced the Infilling of the Holy Spirit? There had to be a very visible and tangible Spiritual Power that Simon thought was worth a LOT of Money.

A few words from Peter quickly disabused Simon of any Notion that The Holy Spirit could be bought. Simon didn't give Peter an argument, and explanation, an excuse for his behavior, or even a "comeback".

His response was appropriate for anybody who is being corrected for a sin: "Pray For Me."

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

You’re welcome. I had to look into Simon to understand the nature of simony, so thanks for posting this. I’ve seen modern day examples of simony but didn’t know there’s a name for it. We see a lot of simony committed these days in apostate churches where the wealthy ungodly give the church large sums and then they’re put on a pedestal over the Word.

“Simony” is a word that is seldom used thses days, like “Idolatry”, “Adultery”, “Pervesion”, “Deviate”, and “Sinner”.

We woulldn’t want to hurt a sinner’s feewings by calling him one, now would we?/s
