Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem (11/20/24)[Prayer]

Names and Titles of God the Holy Spirit
(Spirit of Power) Acts 8:5-13

5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them.

6 And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did.

7 For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.

8 And there was great joy in that city.

9 But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:

10 To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God.

11 And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries.

12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.

13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.

When Mom and Dad Bought the little One-Bedroom Cape on the GI Bill, it looked like a palace to them. It was perfectly adequate for Mommy and Me, and Daddy made Three. But then, another Baby was soon on the way. On the second floor, there was room for two more bedrooms, but it was a dark, unfinished garret with a little window on each end. Dad went to work, punching our holes in the roof and building big dormer windows, with window seats that doubled as blanket chests. Soon there was more than enough room for the next baby, and another, and another. At one point, Mom had to give up the formal dining room to become Mom and Dad's Bedroom, and, upstairs, it was boys in one room and girls in the other. For some unexplained reason, Yours Truly, the Firstborn, got her own bedroom, the little first floor room that had been the only bedroom in the original floor plan. (I quickly filled it up with Easels, Drawing Tables, and Art Supplies) It wasn't fair, but it was what it was.

Dad went on to build an amazing cement patio with a roof and screens to keep out the bugs. He also built us a sandbox and a playhouse (Which was bigger than most garden sheds) which I remember to this day. It was perfect for a family of four kids.

But then....along came another sister, and then another. It was time to sell the house and move up to a larger one. There were several criteria:

1. It had to be in the City of Boston.
2. It had to be walking distance from school and church.
3. It had to have FOUR Bedrooms
4. It had to be under $19,000.00 (HA HA HA! IMAGINE THAT!)

Finally, the Six-Room Cape that Dad had so lovingly improved and remodeled had to sell first, for at least $14,000.

There were a few issues. That section of Boston was being "Red-lined" and "Blockbusted", two extremely illegal Real Estate practices that changed the demographics of a neighborhood. It was going to be a real challenge getting the required price for a house, especially if you were trying to "do it yourself".

Mom's next-door neighbor, who was very religious and superstitious at the same time, had some bizarre advice:

"Dig a hole in your back yard, and bury a statue of St. Joseph in the hole. Then say this prayer, and your house will sell in a week for the price you want."

Mom was aghast. This was the same neighbor that would swing a pendulum over a pregnant woman's palm and predict the sex of the baby. Even though she had a 50% chance of getting it right, she was sometimes wrong. It was the height of silliness, but this woman actually believed that St. Joseph had taken on Real Estate to supplement his Carpentry Business

Mom DID NOT bury a statue of St. Joseph in the yard, nevertheless, the house sold in a week, and we moved on the Day of JFK's Funeral to a big house in another section of Boston, walking distance from the School and The Church, with Four Bedrooms, and listed for $19,000.00.

And St. Joseph, Bless His heart, had nothing to do with it.

Humans have always wanted to control their environment by supernatural means. The world we live in is difficult enough without even considering the Unseen Realm. Weather, Natural Disasters, Climate Extremes, Wild Animals, Disease, and Violence have plagued Humanity since the first Caveman coveted his neighbor's mate. History's first recorded murder (Cain vs. Able) was due to jealousy over spiritual matters. Every Culture, from the most Primitive to the Most Advanced, has some form of "Magic". Our Myths, Legends, Fairy Tales, Movies, and Fantasy Stories all have a form of "Magic" in them. Even Major Monotheistic Religions stray into Superstitious Behavior from time to time. Magical Thinking and behavior is a Sin, according to the Bible. Even the Bible is assaulted by "Magical Thinking" by sincere Christians who think if they intone certain verses, this or that will happen, or that only ONE Translation is valid, or that somehow the paper, ink, leather, cardboard and glue are sacred in and of themselves.

No one, even someone who was converted by one of the Original Apostles, barely a Generation away from The Death and Resurrection of the Lord Jesus, seems to be immune to "Magical Thinking".

And, in this context, we meet Simon the Sorcerer.

Simon was a Neighborhood fixture who made money offering cures, potions, blessings, and curses to the public. He probably had some standing in the community, even if not all of his spells worked. The important thing was that the neighbors believed that it worked. Then Philip came into town, preaching the Gospel and backing up his claims with REAL healings, REAL deliverance, and REAL miracles.

Philip's results were incontrovertible, and Simon joined up. He believed, was baptized, and really wanted to be able to do what Philip was doing. Whether his conversion was sincere isn't stated, but it looks as if Simon just wanted to add REAL miracles to his Sorcery Inventory. In tomorrow's reading, we will see how the Apostle Peter reacts to THAT. (Hint: It Ain't Good!)

Catholic Supplies stores carry bags of plastic St. Joseph, a favorite with real estate agents. True story: a friend in Poland was lamenting that her house had been on the market for 1 year. She asked me if I could send her a statue of St. Joseph. The day after he arrived, the house got an offer...coincidence? By faith, all things are possible.

Interesting.

St. Joseph was a Righteous man (Matthew 1:19), a Jew from the House of David (Matthew 1 and Luke 3), and the Foster Father of the Messiah, it would be reasonable to suppose that he would be horrified by the practice of plastic statues being used as talismans.

However, sometimes the enemy of our souls will produce fake coincidences that look like miracles to deceive sincere and good-hearted people. We all need to watch out for things like that.

I myself, have been deceived by things that look like a miracle, but came from a deceptive source. When in doubt, wonder upon these questions:

Is the “miracle” consistent with God’s Word? To Whom does it give the Glory? Who does the “miracle” benefit? Does it involve “magical thinking”?

BTW, I wasn’t mocking any particular religious group in my story about the Real Estate thingy. In fact, my own Pentecostal/Evangelical Branch of Christianity is rife with Magical Thinking.

It’s all about discernment.
