Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Almighty and Eternal Father,
How Glorious and Wonderful You Are!
Your Magnificence and Perfection are Overwhelming.
And yet, even more so, Your Justice,
Your Righteousness,
and Your Profound Holiness!
For It is You Who Made All That Exists,
From the Mightiest Galaxies to the Tiniest Atom.
You Know Us Inside and Out.

Our Hearts and Thoughts belong to You.

As I searched for images of St. Stephen to illustrate this thread, I was struck by the similarity between them, whether they were Contemporary Sources, the Middle Ages, or the Renaissance. Eastern Orthodox Icons harmonized with Medieval French Stained Glass, and Sunday School Illustrations bore a resemblance to Early Christian Art.

All of the images showed Stephen as a handsome youth, perhaps a little TOO handsome, almost too sweet to be a First Century Middle Eastern Man who was tough enough to forgive his torturers while being stoned to death.

The clue to this across-the-board Artistic Interpretation can be found in Acts 6:15

"And all that sat in the council, looking stedfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel."

Here is Stephen, standing on trial, facing Death, and he has such a look of Peace on his face that he looks "like an angel".

He then goes on to give a very compressed synopsis of the ENTIRE History of Israel, mashing together incidents of Captivity, Slavery, Wandering, Idolatry, Kings, Kingdoms, Triumphs and Defeats, and reaches a climax in his defense with:

" Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye."

At this, the Council covered their ears, because they KNEW he was right. But they couldn't handle the Truth. This reminds me of the scene in "A Few Good Men". Of Course, I can't imagine Jack Nicholson EVER having "The Face of an Angel".
