Our Father in Heaven,
Magnified and Sanctified is Your Most Holy Name!
You Alone Are Worthy of Praise,

It was One in the morning, and, after seven hours on the road, Mike and I were very tired. We decided to spend the night at a motel, and continue on to Washington the Next Morning, and still have time to attend the Yellow Ribbon Rally at the Ft. Washington Harley Dealership, and Rolling Thunder the Next Morning. We pulled into Motel that had few cars in the Parking lot and a large, blinking, VACANCY sign. As we approached the front door, a man in obvious Muslim attire leaped up from his seat behind the desk, ran to the door and locked it. Then he frantically waved his hands at us and yelled ,"GO AWAY! GO AWAY!" My husband pointed at the VACANCY sign. The Desk clerk then ran back to the desk, switched the sign on so it said "NO VACANCY", and started shouting at us again.

Since we knew we would NOT be sleeping there tonight, we rode to the next available motel and stayed there. I was pretty miffed about the whole thing, but my Husband didn't want to make trouble.

At Rolling Thunder's staging area in the Pentagon Parking Lot, we had been placed beside a Vietnam Vet who rode one of the most beautiful Choppers I had ever seen. He was a huge Black Man from Alabama, wearing all his medals on his Biker Jacket, and, since it takes a long time to coordinate 500,000 motorcycles, we had some time to talk.

I told him about our experience at the motel.

I KNOW how you feel!" he said. Then he began to tell us his story.

Imagine this story with a heavy Alabama Accent:

"I did the trip alone this year, so I didn't have any of the Bruthas to back me up. 'Bout one AM I rolled up to a motel, to catch some z's afore goin' on to DC. The guy at the desk said:

"We Don't Serve Your Kind Here!"

"Why?" I asked. "Cuz I'm BLACK? Cuz I'm a Nam Vet? Why?"

"Oh we serve (N-word) all the time," said the clerk. " It's you BIKERS we hate."

I was stunned at the Old Veteran's story. What was even more stunning was that we had both experienced the same discrimination (being from totally different regional, ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic categories because we both were Bikers. Of course, I had chosen to be in the "out-group", but there are some things , like your race or sex, that you don't choose.

Stephen found himself in a tough situation. One could argue that Stephen didn't choose Christ (Christ Chose him!), but the fact remains that, very soon after his conversion, he had to defend his Faith. He stood before a Council of Religious Scholars who had the power of life and death over this young man. Who knew that working a a Widows' Lunch Program would land him in this situation!

The Holy Spirit was there for Stephen, to give him the words he needed to say. His words rang with such truth that the accusers had to cover their ears. We are responsible for what we know, and by hearing the Truth, the accusers were now responsible for Stephen's Death.

Both the desk clerk in Alabama and the one in Nyack, NY. knew that it was completely illegal to deny accommodations to people due to either the color of their skin, their military experience, or even the number of wheels on their duly registered, insured, licensed motor vehicle. They knew, and yet chose to break the law because of their hate and bigotry. Sure, there are "bad" bikers (about 1% and Proud of it!), but you judge all of us by that 1%.

For the Old Black Vet and Us, we just had to find somewhere else to sleep. For Steven, it would mean getting stoned to death for his Faith.
