Oh LORD,
Our God!
Sanctified and Holy is Your Most Hallowed Name.
How Excellent,
How Wonderful,
How Perfect You Are!
My heart is Overwhelmed With Your Glory,
Your Magnificence,
and Your Power!
When I think of how Awesome You Are,
Of How You Transcend Time and Space,
Of How You Created Everything That Is and Ever Was,
Of How You Tell History From the Beginning to The End

Even in my affluent community, there are poor people. There is one very nice Public Housing Complex, and a couple of converted Motels that serve as temporary homes for homeless people. There are two trailer parks nestled between million dollar homes, and the median price of a house is around $900,000.00. It's hard to believe that there are poor people in the community, but the Food Pantry, staffed by Volunteers, is very busy these days. There was a point in my life when I was very happy that the Food Pantry was there.

Sometimes there were conflicts at the Food Pantry. Arguments over "who got there first", people cutting into the line, and certain items running out before the people did, sometimes could cause an unpleasant scene. Sometimes, cultural or ethnic differences would cause conflict. Some participants were rude to the Volunteers, which used to get me VERY angry. I just couldn't get past the attitude!

It would seem that this "Sense of Entitlement" is nothing new. In Acts 6, we learn that the Apostles wasted no time in setting up a Lunch Program for the Widows in their Community. This was important, because a Widow had no more support from her late husband, and there were no Government Programs to take over. The Apostles' Lunch Program may have been the only thing between the Widow and Starvation. But here they were, squabbling! The Widows who had adopted the Liberal Ways of Greek Culture felt that they were being ignored in favor of the Widows who embraced Jewish Culture. Meanwhile, the Apostles were waiting on tables, listening to complaints, and trying to Preach the Word at the same time.

It was then that seven men were "ordained" as Deacons. Their job was to take on the physical care of the assembly, while the Apostles took care of the Spiritual needs, devoting themselves to prayer and preaching.

The choosing of the Deacons was not dependent upon their previous experience in the Restaurant Business (or whether they had worked for McDonald's when they were teens). Instead, they were chosen on the basis of their Spiritual Maturity and Integrity.

As we shall see in the Book of Acts, the choosing of Steven for this task, based on his being "Filled With The Holy Spirit", was a wise one.

He ended up being the First Martyr for the Faith.
