When I saw The Rolling Stones last May, it was in a huge stadium that seats over 50,000 people. While I was amazed that Mick Jagger, at the age of 83, could still rock the place, I was more impressed with the Sound Production and Staging. It was flawless, and you could hear every note and lyric.

"Doing Sound" for a live performance is a tricky business. It is important that each instrument is heard clearly, and that the Vocals aren't submerged under the sound of the Instruments. Microphones have to be placed in the proper positions, so that they don't pick up ambient sounds from either instruments or the audience. All the mikes and amplifiers need to be balanced and "equalized" and the entire stage has to be panned in three directions (left, right, and the depth of the stage) in order to simulate the positions of the performers. Onboard effects need to be coordinated, and this is further complicated if there is a Video feed or a Light Show (or BOTH!). I have never done the Sound for a Huge Venue , but mostly small clubs, restaurants, and auditoriums. After I set things up, I walk around the venue and listen. Usually it's too LOUD. Careful "tweaking" brings the sound to a nice, clear, balanced sound that everyone can enjoy, no matter where they are sitting in the restaurant. I asked my sister if she minds having a "deaf soundman" (I am hearing impaired). She replied "Better a Deaf Soundman than a Blind Chauffeur".

In this Political Season, we have seen a lot of Bad Audio at Rallies and Speeches around the country. Feedback, Echoes, Excessive Loudness, Cutting Out, Distortion, and Muffled Microphones have all made their appearances. Those watching these events online expressed their displeasure. Sound is CRUCIAL. But, what is even more crucial, is what is being said.

Jerusalem was full of People on the Day of Pentecost. Many had traveled there from distant lands, and it may have been the trip of a lifetime for them. It was a tenet of their Faith that they be in Jerusalem for these Feast Days. There were probably about 5000 people or more in the crowd, judging from the number of people who responded favorably to Peter's Message (over 3000).

At first, people marveled that Peter was speaking their own language. There were others who didn't seem to hear anything but gibberish, and they accused Peter of being drunk. As Peter spoke, he quoted the Prophet Joel, and connected his words with what was happening before their eyes.

Until I sat on the shore of the Sea of Galilee and heard how natural amphitheaters can amplify sound, I had no idea how Ancient Orators could get their message to so many people.

I have to admit though, that Peter had the Best "Soundman" in the Universe!
