Reporter's Inbox: Catholics join social media conspiracy about government weather control
National Catholic Reporter ^ | Oct. 9, 2024 | BY JOHN GROSSO

Posted on 10/23/2024 8:25:56 PM PDT by ConservativeMind

Multiple prominent conservative Catholic social media personalities have joined their voices to online conspiracy theorists who believe that the United States government controls the weather.

The outlandish claims gained traction in the wake of the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene and picked up steam during the unprecedented strengthening of Hurricane Milton — but did not reach mainstream social media until Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) proclaimed on X: "Yes, they can control the weather."

There is no evidence that the government or any other entity can control, manipulate or route a hurricane or storm in a specific direction. Officials warn that misinformation could obfuscate efforts to rescue and recover after both storms and blame social media for the rise in the unsubstantiated theory.

That has not stopped rampant social media speculation that the Biden-Harris administration either specifically directed the hurricanes to impact Republican areas, or had the ability to prevent their carnage and refused to act.

Taylor Greene, who is not Catholic, has shared at least three posts related to the conspiracy. Though she was widely mocked in the comments to her initial post on X, her statement spread like wildfire on the platform and beyond, fueling rumors and speculation made worse by the emergence and strengthening of Hurricane Milton.

The conspiracy theories have gotten so pervasive that they prompted a response from various government officials.

It didn't take long for some prominent social media Catholics to comment on the conspiracy theory. On Oct. 8, Eric Sammons, editor-in-chief of conservative-leaning Crisis Magazine said on X that while he did not believe that " 'they' can control the weather" he might be proven wrong, and thus wasn't able to condemn anyone else who believed "they" could. Sammons did not clarify who he meant by "they" and hasn't commented on it since.

I wouldn’t be surprised at this point if this is true.

Boy, is this thread ever, as the lawyers say, a “trap for the unwary”.

From The National Catholic Distorter," otherwise known as "the Fishwrap," the most liberal Catholic rag on the planet for the last 50 years. Consider the source.

The phrase “Pray for rain” originated with the Catholics, 1054AD I think it was.

Anyone who thinks the government can control weather - especially a hurricane - is clueless, conservative or not. 🙄🙄🙄

The government can do Cloud seeding but that is about it. they cannot create a hurricane or tornado. I have a group of conservative friends that are all into this weather control and chemtrails. They are logic and reason deprived people it is very frustrating. They think I’m the lunatic for not believing them, lol!

It’s called the Hurricane Intensity Modification Program, bomb the eye-wall with super absorbent sub-micron aerosols. 10 years ago, the chemtrail conspiracy seemed absurd. Now we know about a program (hopefully not implemented) to spray sulfate particles into the stratosphere to block the Sun, supposedly to fight the nonexistent “climate crisis.”

I’ve been watching these tropical systems for a long time (Floyd, 1999) and the extreme eye-wall disruptions seem unnatural. Irma and Maria (2017) showed clear signs of tampering with the introduction of GOES-16 (designated GOES-East) visible imagery (0.5 km spatial resolution). When Maria went through Tampa, it had no backside, it was gone. Just one year later, NOAA reduced the resolution of the visible imagery (GeoColor) available to the public.

With Helene, I have never seen them tamper with the eyewall so close to landfall. Hurricanes have a natural ventilation system while over the open water. Here, exhaust from heat energy exits the top of the eye and travels away from the center in a clockwise flow (Northern Hemisphere) as cirrus clouds. But once the storm makes landfall, the ventilation system is cut off.
Particulate matter injected into the eyewall has no way of escape. So, it circulates into the feeder bands causing massive flooding rainfall for days.
It was like they wanted Helene to be even more catastrophic.

What’s the difference between a conspiracy and the truth? Ans: About six months.

Taylor Greene, who is not Catholic

The Reporter, which is Lefty, has an agenda here.

Greene was raised and married Catholic but now, understandably, criticizes the hierarchy.

The Reporter itself finds it noteworthy that Catholic groups should actually support Trump.

I don't think Greene and Eric Sammons (quoted in the article posted) are presenting themselves as climate scientists. They do happen to hold political views at variance with those of the Reporter.

I agree completely. However, anyone who believes that THE GOVERNMENT THINKS they can control weather, is simply paying attention. ;-)

Check your tagline. Is that what you really mean to say? Because it fades into gibberish.

I have family that believe this. I just don’t go there, much.

The strongest argument is that the government is way too inept to control their own bladder emptying stations, let alone the weather.

I don’t see convincing evidence for it, but obviously some weather modification is possible and may be undertaken in limited cases. In an environument where the government lies about a lot of things and is obviously involved in major criminal acts, people start to question everything — luckily, modifying large-scale weather systems is probably far beyond our present technological abilities and even if there was a desire to do it, there are no means to do it.

Specific exaumples offered do not convince me either, it is quite normal for hurricane eyewalls to begin to lose identity near and after landfall. In weather enthusiast circles you will often read the term “halfacane” to describe what a lot of tropical systems look like near landfall.

As to Helene being altered (to cause more flooding), the fact is that two thirds of the flooding rainfall totals came in the two days before Helene hit land, from a stalled front.

We should try to avoid paranoid responses to the revolution in plain sight and concentrate on those things that are self-evidently true (such as the undefended border and massive corruption around the events in ukraine). This card is the joker in our stacked deck.

“I have a group of conservative friends that are all into this weather control and chemtrails”.

Show them the indescriminate “chemtrails” (of both sides) high over the UK during WW2 Battle of Britain.

Or the “chemtrails” of WW2 B-17s. Show them in black and white.

(Literally).

The mountainous topography of Cuba has [historically] done much to reduce the powerful effects of hurricanes on Florida and beyond.

If Castro could’ve increased destruction in the US, I’m sure he would’ve found a way...

I have a loved one who believes the conspiracy, too. Whenever I respond with skepticism, I am accused of getting my news from liberal sources. (lol) Of course, every conspiracy theory contains some truth. One could argue that cloud seeding is a form of weather control, that aerial spraying to kill mosquitoes is poison, and so on. But, the conspiracy theory isn’t about those things. It’s about an evil master plan. And, who knows, maybe it will turn out to be true... but, so far, the evidence hasn’t proven it.

I doubt it started then. More likely started with periods of drought written of in Old Testament days. I would think they prayed for rain.
