Our Father in Heaven,
How Hallowed,
Magnificent,
and Sanctified
is Your Most Holy Name!
How Blessed and How True is Your Word,
and How Mighty!
How Glorious,
to Span the Millennia,
To be Unfettered by Time and Space,
To Know The End from the Beginning
and the beginning from The End!
For it is You, Oh LORD,
Who designed the Galaxies with Your Compass,

While shouting out an opposing viewpoint in a crowd in a political rally might get you in trouble, there are certain times when one needs one's voice to be heard. What happened in the past week is an interesting example of how the same phrase, when spoken in two entirely different environments, have totally different reactions.

The first incident was at a rally for the Democrat Nominee for President. A youth in the audience yelled out a phrase, presumably in reaction to the candidate's statement about abortion. The phrase was:

"Jesus Is Lord!"

The candidate gave him a snarky answer that he was "at the wrong rally", and the youth has since testified that he was pushed, booed, jostled, and cursed at by the crowd as he was "escorted" out of the venue.

The second incident occurred at a Rally for the Republican Vice-Presidential Candidate. While he was speaking, someone behind his said,

"Jesus Is King!"

Without missing a beat the candidate said,

"You're right. Jesus IS King."

The crowd went wild with applause and approval.

Both phrases, which were nearly the same, interrupted the speaker. While it may be fair to say that when a speech is interrupted, it might catch a speaker by surprise, and anything could be blurted out without thinking. This is especially true if it is a prepared speech, or if the speaker is using a teleprompter.

Another factor is that the phrase "Jesus is Lord (or King)!" can be perceived either as an affirmation of Truth, or as an attack on the candidate. As we can see from the vastly different responses, this was the case with these two incidents.

It was the reaction of the crowds that was most disturbing to me. While it's perfectly normal for hecklers to be escorted out of a rally for being disruptive, it's not appropriate for there to be a gauntlet of audience members abusing the heckler as he is escorted out. That appears to be what happened at the first rally.

Wherever one stands politically, it has to be admitted that two totally different mindsets are represented in these incidents. Today's Scripture passage illustrates that with regard to The Holy Spirit.

A person can't get to The Father, except through The Son. He can't accept the Son, except by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Luke describes this spiritual blindness as "Scales over Paul's Eyes" (Acts 9:18), and Paul himself calls it a "Veil" (2 Corinthians 3:14-15). Jesus even spoke of spiritual blindness when He was speaking to the Pharisees (John 9:41). Spiritual Blindness is not the same as "Innocence", because innocence implies that one doesn't know any better. Spiritual Blindness in an ignorant, untaught, person who doesn't know any better is not nearly as bad as someone who has heard the Truth, knows the Truth, and has even studied the Truth, and yet persists in thinking and expressing the exact opposite.

As we learn from these two incidents, the same Truth can bring violently different reactions.

The tragedy is that, in our Western Culture, the Truth is readily available to everybody. It's the Response that makes all the difference.
