If I were to take a poll as to "What Was the Worst Day of Your Life?", I would venture a guess that 90% of you would choose this option:

"The Worst Day of My Life Was When I Was Betrayed by My (spouse, lover, best friend, teacher, pastor, parent, sibling, etc)"

My spirit grieves just typing those words, as your spirit probably does reading them.

Even though Jesus had the foreknowledge that Judas would betray Him, and even though He knew it was all part of the Plan, He was nevertheless still grieving in His innermost spirit when contemplating that act.

It is nearly impossible to betray a cynical, suspicious, mean-spirited person, because such a person would not have trusted a betrayer in the first place. A betrayal is most efficacious when the person betrayed loved and trusted the betrayer.

In some instances, betrayer has to work very hard to earn that love and trust, just in order to be able to betray the victim.

An example would be the Undercover Agent who infiltrates a gang, undergoing all the initiations and testing of loyalties. These can sometimes involve even committing crimes himself.

The character of Judas has fascinated and puzzled scholars for centuries. Was he a traitor from Day One, infiltrating the followers of Jesus in order to betray Him? Was he a Zealot who sincerely believed that Jesus was a Conquering Messiah who would deliver Israel from the Roman Empire? Was he a sincere disciple at first, only to become used of Satan?

One thing we do know is that Jesus was not fooled. He knew what was in Judas's heart. The Apostle John had an idea what was going on as well, and, at the time, may have wondered why Jesus didn't seem to mind that Judas was dipping into Ministry Funds, and He had actually made him Treasurer!

Even though Jesus did know what was going to happen, it didn't mitigate the hurt and pain of betrayal. The part of Him most wounded by betrayal was His inner being, what is translated "spirit" here in the KJV.

The word, of course, is Pneuma, that word that means spirit, breath, wind, breeze, soul, ghost, and The Holy Spirit Himself.

I hope it never happens, but if you ever find yourself on the receiving end of betrayal, it helps to remember that Jesus knows exactly how you feel.
