Outrage as polyamory cult seizes huge swathe of public Colorado beauty spot without permission

A polyamory cult has fenced off a huge portion of land in southwestern Colorado and attempted to claim it for themselves under the Homestead Act of 1862.

The Free Land Holders have fenced off about 1,400 acres of San Juan National Forest land.

The group were formerly associated with the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and other well-known figures, including imprisoned FLDS President Warren Jeffs, who called himself a prophet and is serving a life sentence in Texas for child sexual assault.

The group, an offshoot of the mainstream Mormon church, encourages members to engage polygamy.

'The Forest Service don't own the land. It's not in their name. It's just managed by the Forest Service. I don't think it's mine. It's the Free Land Holders Committee who has the jurisdiction and the authority,' Patrick Pipkin, a member of the Free Land Holders told The Denver Post.

'We come in peace and honor. People are going to see it and understand. I know the bully tactics of what they are choosing to do. That ain't who we are.'

The members in Montezuma County, Colorado, have fenced off a portion of U.S. Forest Service Land in an attempt to claim it for themselves.

The Homestead Act was a landmark U.S. law that aimed to encourage westward expansion by offering free land to settlers, but it is no longer in use, with the act officially being repealed in 1976 by the Federal Land Policy and Management Act.

The Montezuma County Sheriff's Office said the group's actions have resulted in a property dispute between the Free Land Holders and the U.S. Forest Service in the Chicken Creek area.

Good luck getting rid of them. Their 50 wives are always pregnant so they are increasing in numbers every 10 months.

SO there's that. This won't be allowed to stand. Will they initiate an armed standoff?

Do they even vote? These people are so cut off from the rest of the world I’m not sure they do.

Point well taken.

But no outrage about apartments in Colorado being seized by violent Venezuelan gangs.

You are correct. Their actions on trying to homestead this land have no legal basis. There are two ways to end this.

1. Remove them physically with armed law enforcement.
2. Close all access to the area with armed law enforcement and let hunger and thirst solve the problem and winter is coming. They will leave. I like both options but prefer option 1. Option 2 will harm children that are innocent.

As an aside the Federal Government owns most of the land in the West. I would like the homestead act revived so these federal lands would be open for all. The Feds own to much of OUR LAND.

This is a link to a map of federal lands in our nation.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Map_of_all_U.S._Federal_Land.jpg

Every thing West of Texas is mostly Federal. East of Texas there is not much Federal Land, it is mostly national forests and military and federal facilities as it should be. Those lands in the West should be given back to the individual states for development as each state sees fit. Some states will screw it up, think California, Oregon, and Washington. The other states will use it wisely and it will be an economic boom for our nation.

Not a chance! The Fedz need them lands to sell or lease to the ChiComs to service the thirty five trillion bucks they owe.

If it's federal land, does the Sheriff have jurisdiction?

County and State have no authority...

Well, we can rest assured that if illegals did it, the government would roll over and expose their jugular.
