A few years ago,there was an E-Mail floating around that extolled the patriotism of Entertainment Figures during WW2. There were a number of Hollywood Stars pictured in their Military Uniforms, and there were even some who had given their lives in defense of our Nation. Some of these people were ardent Republicans, and still others were just as passionate Democrats. I wasn't alive back then, so all I see is their portrayals in Film and Print. One thing I can tell you is that things are not the same today.

Just because somebody is an accomplished musician, or a talented actor, or even a famous writer, that person has no right to tell you what to think. They, of course, have a right to their own opinions, as do you. What they don't have a right to do is to use their platform to shame and marginalize anybody who doesn't agree with them politically. And, conversely, you have a right to not buy their "product" if you feel that the celebrity has betrayed you and your values.

The Marketplace is a great indicator of what the People want.

My own experience with the band Pink Floyd is a perfect example. I have always enjoyed their edgy, artsy music, that combines Classic Rock with Electronic effects, and "outside jazz" riffs, with layer upon layer of sound, stretching the limits of the Audio Recording Techniques of the day. My guitar students all clamor to be taught "Wish You Were Here" which includes five basic chords and hammer-on techniques. It's a great song to teach those things, and kids get instant accolades from the parents and grandparents when they show up with their little acoustic guitar and play that song.

But, there's a problem. Roger Waters, the Lead Singer for Pink Floyd, has said some very ugly and antisemitic things, and has used vile imagery as props in his concerts. He has made me not like his music anymore, and when you don't like a certain kind of music, why bother listening to it? Nevertheless, the kids should have "Wish You Were Here" in their repertoire, because it has become a Classic Rock Standard.

I suppose Classical Musicians, who happen to be Jewish, have to include Wagner in their repertoire even though he was an antisemite. I've never been asked to play "Here Comes the Bride" at a Jewish Wedding, and I totally understand WHY.

Back in the day, institutions had a bit of respect for people's religious beliefs. I remember my Mom telling me that the famous Tenor Jan Pearce specified in his contract with The Met that he would not sing Opera on Friday Night or Saturday Afternoon because it was the Sabbath. Can you imagine anyone having such a contract these days?

Christians face decisions like this all the time. It's not so much the thought of working on Sunday that causes issues. It is when a Christian (usually an Artist) is called upon to create a work that celebrates something that is against his religion. There has been more than one case of this kind of thing, even going as far as the Supreme Court. This is a tough thing to go through, but not nearly as bad as some historical times and cultures where One's Faith was Against the Law.

Jesus knew we would encounter tribulation when we truly believe.

He promised us that, when we are tested, the Holy Spirit will provide us with the strength and courage, and, yes, the very words we need to say when faced with persecution.

History is full of people who stood up for their beliefs, and some of them became martyrs because of it. That is the true definition of the word "Martyr". It means Witness. If we are called to be a witness, the Holy Spirit will provide us with our testimony.
