A local theater company is mounting a production of a play based on the Horror flick What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? The film, starring Bette Davis and Joan Crawford had a particularly AWFUL scene when Blanche is served lunch by her hateful sister Jane. When Blanche lifts the cover off her plate, she sees a dead rat served to her as her lunch.

Since the two actresses were already bitter enemies, I wonder how much gloating was involved in shooting that scene. I can't imagine the horror of being the recipient of such a thing, and so that scene, which I saw in the movie-house, made me scream, for the one and only time I ever screamed at a movie. (Not counting A Hard Day's Night. I screamed through the entire movie, but it was a different kind of screaming.)

A phenomenon of our culture is a nasty little practical joke known as the Gag Gift. These are nearly always given to adults (they traumatize children!), as the adult reaches some kind of milestone age, like 40, 50, or 60. They usually emphasize the the aging of the person, mocking them for getting old. I once went to a fortieth birthday party, where all the decorations were BLACK, the cake had black frosting, and all the gifts were Gag Gifts. I could tell that the poor, hapless, "Birthday Girl" was getting more and more depressed as the "party ' progressed. All of the decorations, refreshments, and gifts depicted her as aged, deteriorating, and on the way to death. There are times when "being a Good Sport" can go overboard.

This was an extreme example, but I have experienced more than one "Gag Gift" in my lifetime. What one person thinks is funny may not work for another. Yet, I try to maintain my sense of humor as I go through life. My next birthday coming up is one of those "Milestones", so I assume there will be a few Gag Gifts. I don't FEEL old, still ride the Harley, play Rock Guitar, and walk three miles a day. But, I'm still over 70. Who knew? I'm surprised that I survived the 1960's.

Jesus must have known about this coming trend, because He specifically tells us that God doesn't give "Gag Gifts". He uses the example of a person asking his father for a loaf of bread, a fish, or some other good thing, and being rewarded with a stone, a snake, or even a scorpion. Jesus says that even a bad father wouldn't do that to his own kid. Perhaps that is why the scene in "What Ever Happened To Baby Jane" was so horrifying. The Actresses loathed each other so much that there is even a mini-series about their feud, known as , you guessed it, Feud. That's what Jesus was talking about when He said "...you, being evil,... He knows our fallen nature, and, before we are Born into the Kingdom of His Marvelous Light, we have the capacity to be as evil as Baby Jane. Yet, Jesus knows that most people wouldn't give a snake to their child who asked for a fish.

That being said, Jesus assures us that if we ask the Father for the Gift of The Holy Spirit, He isn't going to give us a "Gag Gift".
