If Protestantism owes its very existence to Luther’s conviction that the papacy was the antichrist, it might be instructive to inquire how he came to this conclusion. He did, in fact, come to this view slowly and reluctantly, driven by historical circumstances and theological reflection. It is important to focus primarily on Luther because it was his views on the subject that triggered the Protestant Reformation. It should be noted, however, that he was far from the first person to hold this view. He himself credited John Huss with being the first to call the Pope an antichrist.1Huss did indeed consider the Pope to be the antichrist, but he was not the first to do so, nor was his mentor, John Wycliffe, although Wycliffe and at least some of his Lol land followers, including Sir John Oldcastle, held this belief. This idea also circulated among the Waldensians, the Albigensians, and the Fraticelli, a group of Franciscans with more regard for the rule of St. Fran cis than for papal authority. But even earlier than that, back in 991, Bishop Arnulf of Orleans, describing papal murder, lust, and intrigue, asked, “Are there any bold enough to maintain that the priests of the Lord over all the world are to take their law from monsters of guilt like these?” When a person so deficient in virtue sits on the papal throne, Arnulf suggested that he must “be the ‘Antichrist, sitting in the temple of God, and showing himself as God.’” …

Absolutely true. And, that is exactly why the Catholic Church had to come up with “Jesuit spawned propaganda” to deflect criticism (from Luther and eventually all Reformers) that the Papacy was the Antichrist power and the Pope as it’s head. To explain that all away they came up with Preterism and Futurism. Literally every Evangelical today believes in Futurism, now in the form of Dispensationalism. It is historical fact, which they all deny. Many Catholics believe in Preterism. Luther and the Reformers were Historicists.

I used to believe that the pope = antichrist talk had its place in the past. Maybe those popes weren’t THE antichrist, but they were certainly pushing things against Christ’s teachings (how Paul uses the word antichrist).

I, a Protestant, thought it was a bit much to call the popes in my lifetime as being antichrist when it was clear that God’s church has many more enemies blatantly doing persecution. And here in the US, all the pressure against Christians comes from the political left, including leftists that had infiltrated “mainline” Protestant churches.

But then Papa Frank made it clear to everyone that he deserves to be called anti christ.

Looks like historical revisionism going on here. The foundations of Protestantism was Luther’s conviction of salvation by grace.

Luther’s thoughts on the Papacy were formed by later religious persecution for his beliefs and incidental to his belief in salvation by grace.

Roman Emperor Constantine was the original “Vicarius Christi” in Latin(Anti Christos in Greek). In English, Vicar of Christ. When Constantine captured Christianity financially and by regulation, he was literally called Anti Christ, and Pontix Maximus (leader of the Roman Pantheon. When Constantine moved the capital of the Roman Empire to Constantinople, he made the Roman Bishop pope and gave the Pope the title, Vicarius Christi.

While the Popes are indeed Antichrists, The real anti christ will be a Religious Leader and Emperor like Constantine, since Jesus Christ is the only King and Lord!
