Last Night, still smarting from hitting her head last Sunday, my sister really needed to get out. She had been babysitting with the grandchildren all day, and craved some adult company. Since I would be driving, she donned some big dark sunglasses to conceal her two black eyes, grabbed her guitar, and we went to a local "Open Mike Night" less than four miles away. When we got there, the dad of two of my students was hoisting a few with his softball team.

I introduced him to my sister, explained the dark glasses, and went up to the stage to do my set. While I was playing my songs, the dad and my sister were engaged in conversation. Then the dad went back to his teammates and hung out with them until my set was over. Since it was a slow night, I was onstage for nearly a half hour, and, upon finishing, I noticed that the softball team had left. .

I sat down next to my sister and she said:

They really LOVE you! When Harry practices "Let It Be" he SINGS the song as he's playing it!"

I was stunned. I usually sang the song during the lesson, as I am teaching Harry how to accompany a Vocalist. I'd never heard HIM sing. I guess he's going to be a SINGING piano player! (Not bad for an eight-year-old kid!). Next I'll have to teach him some Billy Joel Songs!

I've been teaching for over 25 years, and in that time I've had to change my way of writing out the Practice Assignment. Elementary School Children used to have no trouble reading my handwriting, but now, I am told that they are not taught "cursive" in school. I have to PRINT everything now. That rationale is that Texting, Computers, and other devices are all in print, not cursive, and so it is unnecessary. While I understand this (and empathize, as I have a hard time with cursive in Russian and Hebrew and can only read the Print Form), I am appalled that kids can't read cursive at all.

"Our Founding Documents are in Cursive," I argue. "How can you know what your RIGHTS are, if you can't read the Original Documents? On the computer, you can change anything and pass it off as the original!"

I grew up in a Culture in which The Constitution was enshrined as "The Law of the Land". The Supreme Court was the Last Stop for every American who felt his or her RIGHTS had been abused. The Job of the Supreme Court was to determine whether a Law was "Constitutional" or "Unconstitutional". That was how they were able to determine if your Rights had been violated or not. At least, that was how it was supposed to work. However, if a Generation of Judges only can read what their devices tell them is in the Constitution, how can they judge accurately?

While this may be an overly simplistic way of looking at things, I still an aggravated by the passing of cursive into obscurity.

For those of us who can still read the Founding Documents, we know we have our RIGHTS enshrined in the First Ten Amendments to the Constitution. The First and Second Amendments are intertwined. One is not enforceable without the other. And yet, we see these Rights being eroded right before our eyes. Often, it's the old excuse of "National Security" that erodes these Rights. That goes back a long way. Freedom of Speech was ominously curtailed during the First World War, and even Abraham Lincoln suspended Habeus Corpus during the War Between The States.

The explosion of Social Media has made this even more difficult. A person can get in trouble merely for "liking" a mean tweet fifteen years ago.

That brings us to Today's Scripture. Just as Freedom of Speech is eroding, so are the other Freedoms. Freedom Of Religion met a huge challenge during the COVID mania, and a mere handful of churches stood up for their rights. Some of these had pastors who faced huge fines or even imprisonment for their defiance.The fear of contagion was a crack that the evil one used to wiggle into the church and other institutions to deny people their Rights. And most of us just took it.

Though I'm not a fan of FDR, he did say something very wise:

"The Only Thing We Have To Fear, Is Fear Itself."

Jesus tells us not to fear what man can do to us. We don't have to "have a plan", rehearse our answers, or try to escape telling the Truth. If we need to provide Witness, The Holy Spirit will give us the words. If we suffer for Our Faith, so be it.

The "Retirement Plan" for The Truth is out of this world.
