Our Father in Heaven,
Magnified and Sanctified is Your Most Holy Name!
How We Love You,
With Our Whole Heart,
Our Whole Soul,
Our Whole Mind,
and Our Whole Strength!

As I said yesterday, Today's Scripture Portion is probably the scariest Verse in the entire Bible. I hesitate to even interpret it, as I would NOT want to say anything that is NOT TRUE about The Holy Spirit. So, with a lot of Prayer, and a Deep Breath, I will share what this verse means to me.

When I first read this Verse, over forty years ago, it got me searching my conscience. Have I ever blasphemed The Holy Spirit, either in a conversation, a song lyric, or a haughty, anti-establishment, irreverent rant to show how "sophisticated" I was? One could argue that some of the Rock Songs I loved (and sang in the band) had questionable lyrics...was THAT blaspheming The Holy Spirit? To make matters worse, everybody I asked about this had a different answer. One said that it was rejecting the Gospel Message. Another said that it was leaving one church to go to another. There was even a Radio Preacher, whom I had respected as an excellent Bible Teacher, who said that utilizing the Gifts of the Spirit in the Modern Age was Blaspheming the Holy Spirit. (He was what is called a "Cessessionist") I found it disturbing that this man, who was so knowledgeable about every other aspect of the Bible, was so adamant about this ONE thing. While, I felt that he had a right to believe that some had gone overboard with the Gifts, it wasn't very nice to make this accusation. Anyway, I try and take the Path of Peace when I disagree with a Fellow Believer. That's why I beg folks not to get involved in debates on this particular thread. There are plenty of other spaces for that.

But, if none of the Above are this Unforgivable Sin, what is?

Here is where a Verse needs to be read in context, to see what it means.

Jesus had just delivered a person from demonic possession, in front of witnesses. Some of these witnesses were Religious Scholars who knew the Bible better than I ever could . They spent a lifetime in Study, Learning, Teaching, Discussing, Interpreting, and Applying The Law of Moses. They knew the Torah and the Prophets inside and out. They anxiously awaited Messiah, knew what the signs would be, and could best anybody in a debate about Scripture. It had been men like them who had translated the entire Old Testament into Greek, so others could learn it, and they meticulously kept the Law, even making up new laws to make sure.

Now they were witnessing a Miracle right before their very eyes. A fellow human being, who had been tormented by demons, probably for years, was restored to freedom and sanity. Their reaction should have been joy and reverence, and accolades to the person who had done this great thing.

Instead, they attribute the deliverance to the "Lord of the Flies" (Beelzebub, another name for Satan, the Adversary) and say that Jesus is doing the devil's work. This was, in fact, accusing Jesus of channeling Satan to drive out Satan's demons from the poor soul that now stood before them, healed, delivered, and in his right mind.

Jesus counters their accusation with logic. "How can Satan cast out himself?" "Who do YOU invoke when YOU are doing exorcisms?" (evidently that had been a part of their ministry). The famous line that Jesus says has become a part of our Culture, and was even quoted by Abraham Lincoln at the outbreak of the Civil War:

"A House Divided Against Itself Can Not Stand..."

Right away, we see that Jesus is exposing that these critics know better than to attribute the power of the Good God to the Evil Adversary, and yet they do it anyway.

And that, I believe, is "Blaspheming The Holy Spirit."

The key is knowing the Truth and still lying about God and His Power and His Power.

If you have to search your soul and worry if you've ever done it, then you probably NEVER did.
