One of my very first attempts at ministry was that of a Telephone Counselor for a TV Ministry. I showed up at the TV Station ready to conquer the world with my "wisdom". The minister in charge didn't like me at all, and didn't want to put me on the phone. I begged and pleaded, and he finally relented, cautioning me to ONLY use the Bible, and the accompanying handbook, which listed all the problems known to mankind, and the appropriate Scriptures to use.

The first call of the evening was a distraught lady whose beloved dog had died. She had called a famous radio ministry with her grief and was lambasted by the host (Harold Camping), who told her she was in sin for lavishing grief upon an animal, since animals don't have souls.

My heart was filled with compassion for her, but I was stumped as to what to say. I didn't like Harold Camping, but I knew it would be inappropriate to say so. The handbook had nothing about the loss of a pet. I was speechless, and humbled.

I prayed,

Dear Lord, Please give me something, anything, from Your Word that will comfort this Lady. You are the Author of Scripture, and You know best."

I opened the Bible at random and put my finger on the page. Here is what it said:

Proverbs 12:10
King James Version

"10 A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel."

This little obscure Passage from Proverbs comforted that lady more than all the mature, scholarly, dissertations ever could.

Years later, Harold Camping, the Radio Preacher that had been abusive to the Caller whose dog had died, predicted that The Rapture of the Church would occur on May 21, 2011.

There were billboards all over Florida announcing this prophecy. Then, May 21st came and went, and nothing happened. It brought shame and embarrassment to the Christian Community. Instead of apologizing, Camping just set another date, which came and went. Camping suffered a massive stroke which took away his biggest gift...his mellifluous, persuasive, sonorous VOICE.

God takes a dim view of False Prophets.

There is a lot of talk about Prophecy these days. While we may think that there is a groundswell of Prophecy going on, it actually has been with us for thousands of years. Both True and False Prophets have proliferated, often gaining a large following who end up becoming disappointed.

Just because there are False Prophets around, we shouldn't assume that this Gift of the Holy Spirit is gone from us. God has given us His Word, and there are many prophecies within it that have yet to be fulfilled. If we believe that God is the Same Yesterday, Today, and Forever, then it's incumbent upon us to believe that He still gives people insights and wisdom beyond what we consider "normal". My own personal rules about Prophecy are these:

1. Agreement: Is it consistent with Scripture? Does it respect the Context of a Passage? Is it in line with God's revealed character?

2. Truth: Does the thing that the "prophet" predicted actually happen? This is very easy to check if the "prophet" set a date, or that the prophecy depended upon another event, like a National Election, or Holiday.

3. Glory: Does the prophecy give glory to God, or to the prophet him(her)self?

That being said, Scripture tells us that prophecy comes from God Himself, and is not of our own doing:

Revelation 19:10

10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellow servant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
