Cable TV was unavailable in the City of Boston for many years, while the surrounding suburbs were installing it right outside the City Limits. I remember my In-Laws in Malden, getting 57 Channels on Warner Cable, and another acquaintance getting even more channels with a different carrier. Several companies wanted to get the huge market that would be Boston, the densely populated State Capital.

Whoever was handed the contract for the City of Boston would have to have a monopoly, for the simple reason that competing cable companies couldn't be tearing up the streets, installing their own poles, ripping up pavement willy-nilly, and making a giant mess out of things. I understood this, because I worked as a Customer Service Representative for the Telephone Company, which was a Monopoly.

Customers would call me, and sneer at me that AT&T had a monopoly on Telephone Service, and I would patiently explain that, yes, it is a monopoly, but it is a Regulated Public Utility. Because of the total impracticality (not to mention security issues) that would come from competing companies all vying for your business, a monopoly was allowed but carefully regulated to insure that poor people could still have telephone service, even if it was measured and only had a plain black wall phone.

The Cable Contract for the City of Boston was finally granted to an upstart company called COMCAST, with the assurance that it would be a "regulated" monopoly just like the Phone Company. There would be something called "Basic Cable" which even poor people could afford (I remember it was about $18.00 a month). This would include the local networks, UHF and VHF, and a Local Channel for Community Broadcasts. (This is all from my memory, so I may be wrong on some fine points.)

While some people welcomed Comcast into their homes, others preferred to stick to the old "Rabbit Ears" Antenna on their TV.

Cable became more and more popular, and the prices went up and up. People boasted that they had 300 Channels, and even though a quarter of them were in Spanish, and another quarter were all produced by the same company, the number of channels became more important than the content.

As people became more and more dissatisfied with Cable, they began installing satellite dishes on their roofs. Disenchanted with one service, they would try yet another, but the satellite companies wouldn't take their old dishes back. So the roofs in the community started looking like the Distant Early Warning System, bristling with satellite dishes.

Comcast changed their name to Xfinity, presumably because people were beginning to hate them so much. (At least that is the prevailing opinion). Now there were possibly 500 channels one could access, but still not much quality programming.

The final insult came when Mom had to replace the Rabbit Ears with a Conversion Kit that only worked with Cable. We offered to get her a Smart TV, but she was adamant. It was the PRINCIPLE OF THE THING. The government had taken away her choice to pull free TV our of the air.

However, when we showed her she could watch Westerns on ME-TV, she felt better about it. Her favorites were Bonanza and The Big Valley.

One of the "fruits" of Cable TV is the 24-Hour News Cycle. I got addicted to CNN during the First Gulf War, and was for many years, even though my allegiance switched from CNN to FOX. Then I quit all together. I do not even have a TV in my house anymore. BUT...There's always the Internet! YIKES!

Perhaps even my misadventures with an alleged "Smart" Phone are God's way of keeping me from getting addicted again. Who Knew?

The biggest problem with the 24-Hour News Cycle is that it is all BAD News. The old journalistic adage, "If it bleeds, it leads", is on full display. It seems that people aren't really interested in GOOD News. Yet, we all NEED it so badly.

After the Spirit of the LORD is described as the One Who Anoints, we see the Purpose for which He is Anointing. That is to "Preach the Good News". The word for the Preacher of Good news is "Evangelist". An evangelist is not just the Writer of a Gospel, or someone who can fill a stadium. We are all called to do this.

Like the reporter of "good news" on CNN might be rejected, so might we. Jesus told His Disciples that this would happen too. He said, when it does, shake the dust off your feet and keep moving on. Don't take it personally. He who rejects you is also rejecting Jesus, and rejecting the One Who sent Him.

And that ONE is bigger than CNN, FOX, and COMCAST, all put together.
