Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Oh LORD, Our God,
How Blessed is Your Holy Name!
You Alone Are Worthy of Praise,
For You Alone Are The One True God.
Omnipotent, Omniscient, and Omnipresent,
Teach us To Stand Firm,
And Always look To You For Our Sustenance.
Keep us From Doing Whatever Seems Right In Our own Eyes,

Let all that has been Concealed

I love road maps. While cleaning out my saddlebags, I found a bunch of them: Miami/Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties, West Virginia, Virginia, New York State, and Washington DC. Since I have a wonderful God-Given Gift of a sense of direction, I would always ride point and lead the way when with other bikers. If we did get "lost" (usually by missing an exit), a quick consultation with the road map would set us straight. I even have had street maps of Jerusalem, Cairo, and St. Petersburg (Russia, not Florida) that I used to look at just for fun. Who knew that cleaning out some moldy old paper from the bottom of a saddlebag could evoke such a tsunami of memories!

People laugh at me because I still use a "flip phone". I can make and receive phone calls and texts, and can even access the internet. However, it doesn't have GPS, which everybody uses these days, and, because road maps are now scarce, I decided to get a "smart phone". Everything worked great on it, and I was really enjoying my new purchase until I attempted to use the GPS. The phone said I had to open a G@@gle account to open up the maps. Since I once had a G@@gle account back in the Jurassic Era, G@@gle thought I was trying to open someone else's account and LOCKED MY PHONE. (I believe this is called G@@GLE BYPASS). Neither my Carrier, Nor the Phone's Manufacturer, nor even some friendly hackers can seem to open the phone. I have spent HOURS online and on the phone with "Customer Support" and finally became so frustrated that I took the sim-card out of the smart phone and put it back into my flip phone, which works fine, thank you very much. I am happier with it, so please don't suggest any other methods of opening the smart phone, as I have tried them all (short of hitting it with a hammer or wiping it with a cloth.)

Even as I am pushing 72, I still have that precious God-Given Sense of Direction, that has guided me for over a Half-Century.

I recently watched a "Reaction Video" of some Urdu Tribesmen from Pakistan reacting to the song "Hotel California" by the Eagles. Politely, these "village people" listened to the song and the translation, and offered comments. Some of these comments were definitely colored by their own culture and religion, which, my very erudite Indian friend tells me, is an eclectic mix of Hinduism, Islam, and Spiritism. My friend says that the Islamic Establishment really hates these people and considers them Apostate. Nevertheless, these people listened to the lyrics, commented intelligently on them, marveled that Don Henley could sing and play drums at the same time, and rhapsodized over the big guitar solo at the end.

Then the Tribal Elder, in his turban and embroidered vest, said:

I went to dinner in the city at a restaurant. At the next table, everybody was looking at their smart phones and not talking to one another at all. Is THAT what that line in the lyrics is talking about?"

"What line?" asked the puzzled Moderator.

The Elder looked straight at the Moderator, closed his eyes, stroked his long white beard, and said:

"We are all just prisoners here
Of our own device."

My Indian friend than started telling me about the religion of these people. They are very "into" music, and use it to worship their god. While the Pakistan Establishment outlaws most kinds of music, these "village people" use it as a form of worship. My friend said that they describe the connection between the devotee and his god as like the love of a woman for a man. Yet, he added, there is nothing "sexual" about it. It's about Devotion.

This gave me an opportunity! I explained that, in Christianity, Jesus is called "The Bridegroom", and the Body of Believers is called "The Bride". Nothing "sexual" about it. It's about Devotion. My friend was astonished. He had never heard that before.

All this because of a You Tube Reaction Video. Who knew?

Just as GPS tried to tempt me away from my God-Given Sense of Direction, so the evil one will try to tempt us away from relying on Our Teacher/Leader, The Holy Spirit. We often see the Holy Spirit guiding and leading people in the Scriptures. Jesus was "led by The Spirit into the desert". Paul was led by The Spirit to visit certain towns and avoid others.

Unlike GPS, which has been known to lead motorists into alligator-infested canals in South Florida, The Holy Spirit leads us into the Righteous Path.

May the Lord, in the Person of The Holy Spirit, lead me in Paths of Righteousness for His Name's Sake, and let me not be tempted to be "a prisoner of my own device".
