Our Father in Heaven,
Magnified,

and Hallowed Be Your Most Holy and Glorious Name!

King David had quite a life. From Shepherd Boy to Warrior, from Warrior to Music Therapist, and from Fugitive to King, David's life is worthy of an epic Mini-Series. Alas, we have very few good depictions of David. My favorite is Michelangelo's 12-foot statue of Young David in the transition from Shepherd to Warrior, but I'm pretty sure he didn't go into battle "dressed like that". From Michelangelo to Hollywood, artists tend to depict David in various stages of undress, as shown in this 1985 Movie with Richard Gere dancing in his underwear.

Note the look of utter disdain on the face of the royal-looking woman, as she watches David dance. That's his wife, Micael, daughter of Saul. In the Bible, she gives David an earful over his ecstatic dancing. It is she who is punished for her diatribe, not David for his wild dance. For David, his dance was an act of worship, and Micael was showing contempt for his devotion to God. Her punishment was something very dreaded in those days...infertility.

There are lots of lessons in this private incident in the Bible, some of which are issues to this very day.

An issue that I steer clear of on the Internet is Christian Music. Now, one would think I would just LOVE to get into a knock-down-drag-out fight over Christian Music, since I have been in the field for over forty years. But the truth is, I don't want to be a "Micael" about it. In my own compositions, I am very careful to write lyrics that conform to Scripture, not doctrines of any denomination or movement within Christianity. A lot of music out there, even some traditional hymns, do just that. It's a thin line to walk, because some beliefs are so ingrained that it can be difficult to sort out.

Contrary to some opinions, I don't believe that musical style has anything to do with the spirituality of the song. At one time, Martin Luther's "A Mighty Fortress" was considered revolutionary and scandalous, and some even said that Luther lifted the melody from a "drinking song". The same has been said about The Star Spangled Banner.

My own musical compositions have ranged fro Rock, Pop, Israeli Style, Classical, and, for Biker Church, Blues and Country.

The style was not important as long as the lyrics reflected the Word of God. That has always been my Number One concern.

David says as much in this reflection on his death bed. The Author of more than half of the Book of Psalms gives ALL the "credit" to The Holy Spirit. David speaks of The Anointing of the Rock of Israel, the One True God, upon his lyrics. We don't even know the melodies, or even the style of music that David composed. As a Composer, David was totally dependent upon the Holy Spirit for his Inspiration.

The word "Inspiration" actually means "Breathed In", and reinforces the very Nature of The Holy Spirit as The Breath of Life.

By giving the Glory to God, David has provided an example to all Christian Artists, although I will not be dancing in my underwear any time soon!
