Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem (8/26/24)[Prayer]

Names and Titles of God the Holy Spirit
(Our Defender) Psalm 139:19-24
19 Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, ye bloody men. 20 For they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take thy name in vain. 21 Do not I hate them, O Lord, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee?
22 I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies.
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:
24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
King James Version

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father In Heaven,
Magnified and Sanctified is Your Most Holy Name!
We Give Thanks To You,
For Your Mercy Endures Forever.
Your Faithfulness and Lovingkindness
Transcends Anything We can imagine or comprehend.
Almighty God,
We Come before You This Morning,
Full of Awe and Thanksgiving,
To Worship and Praise You,
For You Alone Are Holy,
You Alone Are Worthy,
You Alone Are The One True God.
King Of The Universe,
We Thank You For your Wonderful Word,
Which Constantly Reminds Us of Your Faithfulness.
Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.
Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.
This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.
God Bless America.

Psalm 82
A Psalm of Asaph.
1 God has taken his place in the divine council;
in the midst of the gods he holds judgement:
2 ‘How long will you judge unjustly
and show partiality to the wicked?
Selah
3 Give justice to the weak and the orphan;
maintain the right of the lowly and the destitute.
4 Rescue the weak and the needy;
deliver them from the hand of the wicked.’
5 They have neither knowledge nor understanding,
they walk around in darkness;
all the foundations of the earth are shaken.
6 I say, ‘You are gods,
children of the Most High, all of you;
7 nevertheless, you shall die like mortals,
and fall like any prince.’*
8 Rise up, O God, judge the earth;
for all the nations belong to you!

A few days ago, I told the story of a Songwriter friend of mine who set Psalm 139 to Music and won Honorable Mention in a Contemporary Christian Music Contest. I also shared how an ignorant critic deplored her lyrics and gave her a bitter, scathing review. That Songwriter wasn't ME, but it was a person very close to me. When she shared her story, I felt her pain, having gotten similar diatribes from "Songpluggers" over the years. The Eternal Question Still Burns Within Me:
"If these critics are SO GOOD at this, why aren't THEY writing the Hit Songs instead of criticizing others?"
I, too, have set Psalm 139 to music, and used to perform it at Biker Church. It had three verses, and the Chorus went like this:
"Such Knowledge is too Wonderful For Me
Far too lofty for me to attain
Your Glory is so Marvelous to see
And I love to Praise Your Name,
Yes, I love to Praise Your Name." (c2014 MLK)
While Psalm 139 has FOUR Verses, both my song and my friend's song only had three. The "fourth verse" of the Psalm didn't seem to fit in with the rest of it.
Psalm 139 takes an abrupt U-Turn at the end, which puzzles songwriters and scholars alike. What starts out as a Life-Affirming, Glorious Hymn of Praise to the Omnipotent, Omniscient, and Omnipresent God, suddenly veers off into what is called an "Imprecatory Psalm". An "imprecation" is a malediction, or a "curse". Another Psalm that does a U-Turn like this is Psalm 137, known as "By The Rivers of Babylon". That Psalm has also been set to music, and also leaves off the last verse, which is a cry for Vengeance. (By The Way, I LOVE the Reggae Song that comes from Psalm 137.
To our modern ears, imprecatory Psalms sometimes cause a bit of a "cringe response". Who are we to call down imprecations on ANYONE? Aren't we supposed to love one another?
We base our laws, ethics, morality, and culture upon the diving line between "Good" and "Evil". But who decides what is "Good" and "What is "Evil"? Different Cultures have different parameters for these two opposites.
I remember reading about a missionary who was horrified to learn that the headhunters with whom he had shared the Gospel thought that JUDAS was the "Hero" of the story. (They thought he was quite clever, to infiltrate, deceive, betray, and get paid for it).
Even atheists have to have a recognition of Good vs. Evil. If a person has no cognition of good and evil, they are considered a "Sociopath" or, even worse, a "Psychopath". If there is no "Good" or "Evil", why not do whatever you want? What's holding you back? Better yet, what is holding anyone ELSE back?
We are called to love what is good and hate what is evil. We are also called to protect the ones who are weaker than ourselves from evil, and defend the defenseless. We also need to have laws to keep evil people from running rampant over the rights of others. We long to see Justice, and we are enjoined by Scripture to Pursue it.
But Vengeance is another story. God tells us through His Word that Vengeance is HIS Department. We are not to take Vengeance ourselves, no matter how offended we may be.
Since Vengeance belongs to the Lord, it is appropriate to give Him our desire for it. The Imprecatory Psalms do that. They cry out to God to "take care of business" and defend the Good against the Evil.
And He does. We don't always see it in motion, but "what goes around comes around". Since God sees the Beginning from the End and the End from the Beginning, our prayers for Vengeance are also a part of our walk with Him. He knows our thoughts, desires, pain, and longings. He wants us to be honest with Him.
David spends the first three quarters of this Psalm praising the Spirit for His Omnipresence, Omniscience, and Omnipotence. Only then can David express to God his longing for Justice, because Only God can make it right.
Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open. (Mark 4:22)
God Bless America.
Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.
Hallelujah and Amen
