Year after year, I tried to get onto the JEOPARDY! TV Show. I took the test every time it became available online, and aced the sample tests. Nobody enjoyed watching the show with me, because I would shout out the answers (questions?) before everybody else did. And then...a FRIEND of mine got on the show. She did very well and was the high scorer when the game went to "Final Jeopardy".

My friend was a very educated woman and a Practicing Conservative Jew, so imagine her joy when the category for Final Jeopardy was revealed as:

"OLD TESTAMENT".

She bet the entire amount of her winnings on what would be a sure thing. Then the Clue came up on the screen:

The Two Old testament Books that Have the Ten Commandments Stated in Order."

She knew half the answer. The Book of EXODUS reveals the Ten Commandments as Moses comes down from Mt. Sinai, but WHAT was the other Book?

Well, let's see..."Ten" is a Number, so it must be the Book of Numbers! She wrote down:

"WHAT ARE EXODUS AND NUMBERS?"

And it was wrong. The correct answer was:

"WHAT ARE EXODUS AND DEUTERONOMY?"

She was heartbroken! I explained to her that "Deuteronomy" means "the second reading" as of, the Law, or the Ten Commandments. It's actually written like a memoir from the pen of Moses, and almost has a personal, folksy feeling to it. It is also the Old Testament Book that Jesus quoted a lot, maybe even more than any other. (I would have won JEOPARDY! that night, but, alas, it was not to be. I don't even care anymore since Alex passed away.)

Although there ARE a lot of numbers in the Book that bears that name, there are a lot more things going on. The Book chronicles stories that happened during the Forty Year Wandering in the Desert, and the first forays into the Promised Land. The Name "Star of Jacob" comes from a particularly odd story about a Pagan Prophet who gets hired to curse Israel.

The king of the region is really afraid of the Israelites, and tries to get Balaam the Prophet to put a curse on them. Through a series of crazy mishaps (including an avenging angel, a talking donkey, and other "accidents") Balaam finds himself on a mountain overlooking the Israelite Camp. He opens his mouth to pronounce a Curse, and BLESSINGS come out. The king, infuriated by this betrayal, should properly dismiss the prophet, but, instead, keeps offering him MORE MONEY to do the job. (This is typical of government...just keep throwing MONEY at the problem!) So, Balaam takes the cash, and MORE Blessings pour out of his mouth. Both he and the king get so frustrated that they finally abandon the "Project Curse Israel". (Balaam, however, does NOT issue a refund.)

Now, although Balaam was a Pagan and a False Prophet, he was used of God to pronounce Blessing and even give us a Prophecy of Messiah. He says a "Star Shall Come Out of Jacob" and a "Scepter" shall rise out of Israel".

The Scepter is indicative of Earthy Authority, so that prophecy is easy to imagine. Balaam is saying that Israel will produce a King in the future. We know that this has been proven by the Historical Records. Israel has produced many kings, some of whom were considered the Best and Wisest of all time.

But, a "STAR" is a Heavenly Body. Ancient people equated stars with their gods. There are even people today who look to the stars for their destiny, although this is forbidden in Scripture. With our scientific knowledge today, we know that the stars are just big balls of energy, some bigger, some smaller, some hotter, some denser, but they are NOT "gods". But Balaam was not aware of this at the time. To him, a "Scepter" would indicate a Temporal Ruler, and a "Star" would be a "Heavenly" Ruler. The Person who he "saw" in his Vision would be BOTH.

This brings to mind modern-day prophets who only prophesy good stuff for the people who hired them. Nobody wants to pay a big pile of cash to have somebody give them BAD NEWS. Here are some guidelines when dealing with the Gift of Prophecy:

1. Flattery: If all the "prophet" ever says is "happy talk", doesn't address sin or repentance, WATCH OUT.

2. Deviation From Scripture: If the words or concepts promoted by the "prophet" disagree with the Word of God, then they aren't the "words of God".

3. Fulfillment: If the "prophecy" doesn't come true even though the "prophet" gave it a time-frame, then the prophecy was false.

4. To Whom Be The Glory?: Sometimes, a prophecy may indeed come true, and the "prophet" uses this fulfillment as an enticement to go after other "gods". There is a specific warning about this in the Torah. So, even if the prophecy comes to pass, don't let it tempt you away from The One True God. Balaam was still a Pagan even after he spoke a True Prophecy over Israel. His encounter with the Almighty didn't seem to change him one bit.

So, while Miracles Happen, don't be fooled by the counterfeits.
