Unless a person is, say, camping in primitive conditions, it is still possible to make the effort to bring along some nice clothes for church. I do it all the time when renting a cabin or staying in hotels and it really isn't that much trouble.
It may not fit the particular context you are speaking of, but the excuse, "At least they show up," really grinds on me. It's like they're doing God a gigantic favor by giving Him a measly hour out of their week.
IMHO the Catholic Church is dying, through their own fault. Used to be the church encouraged families and often had 3-4 generations attending. Now it is 90% old people. And when they die off the church will close.
The Catholic Church was the Church founded by Jesus himself and will never "die" until the Second Coming. Christ promised the gates of hell would not prevail against it, so if it did die he would be a liar or a deluded fool and he would not be worth following. The Church in any given location (including the United States) may die (many of the churches named in the New Testament are long gone) but the church as a whole will be here for the duration.
As a whole, all Christian bodies have seen a reduction in attendance; it is a societal thing that affects religion across the board. In many cases, however, it is regional. Where I live, and especially in my own parish (which is Novus Ordo but "conservative"), there are lots of young families every Sunday. Also, the Traditional Latin Mass, even though attempts are made to suppress it by the current Pope, is extremely popular with young people, especially those with young families.
My daughter goes to a Catholic School. I became friends with her principal. I remarked to him that the church was putting all recruiting on him. When I went to Catholic school in the 60’s the priest and nuns were heavily involved, I’m not seeing that now. In 3 different Catholic Schools my daughter has attended in the past 9 years, she never had a nun as a teacher. I had at least 4 nun teachers in my 4 years in Catholic schools.
More so, within 10 miles of me at least 2 Catholic Schools have closed that I know of. The church is losing its children.
