Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father,
Who Art in Heaven
How Awesome is Your Most Holy Name!
You Alone Are Worthy of Worship and Praise,
For You Alone Are The One True God,
Glorious In Majesty,
And Magnificent beyond Understanding!
You Are Our Strength and Our Song,
Our Refuge and Our High Tower,
Our Rock and Our Redeemer,
Our Sword and Our Shield!

Thank You, LORD,
For For Your Eternal Word.
Thank You For Its Glorious Message of Grace and Hope.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

Psalm 58

To the leader: Do Not Destroy. Of David. A Miktam.

1 Do you indeed decree what is right, you gods?*
Do you judge people fairly?
2 No, in your hearts you devise wrongs;
your hands deal out violence on earth.

3 The wicked go astray from the womb;
they err from their birth, speaking lies.
4 They have venom like the venom of a serpent,
like the deaf adder that stops its ear,
5 so that it does not hear the voice of charmers
or of the cunning enchanter.

6 O God, break the teeth in their mouths;
tear out the fangs of the young lions, O Lord!
7 Let them vanish like water that runs away;
like grass let them be trodden down* and wither.
8 Let them be like the snail that dissolves into slime;
like the untimely birth that never sees the sun.
9 Sooner than your pots can feel the heat of thorns,
whether green or ablaze, may he sweep them away!

10 The righteous will rejoice when they see vengeance done;
they will bathe their feet in the blood of the wicked.
11 People will say, ‘Surely there is a reward for the righteous;
surely there is a God who judges on earth.’

Fifty years ago, I tried my hand at growing vegetables. After boxing off a section of the yard, I prepared the soil and put in the seedlings for cucumbers, tomatoes, and a couple of corn stalks. All summer, I watered, weeded, and tended those plants, until one day, a tiny flower appeared on one tomato plant, and another on a cucumber plant. Hurray! Fresh salad to come! Then I noticed that one of the corn stalks had sprouted a little tassel. Oh Boy! Corn of the Cob! I was so excited. I couldn't figure out why the landlord's garden, which was secured by a heavy fence, was doing so much better than mine. The climate was the same, the soil was the same, and the sun shone alike on both plots. No matter...I still had my one tomato, my one cucumber, and my one ear of corn.

Days went by, and I watched the veggies grow. It was almost time to harvest them and make a nice salad, and have corn on the cob.

When I went out to the yard, I saw that the Landlord had harvested his veggies, and along with his own, had swiped my three little morsels. Of course I couldn't prove it was him, but I felt sure that I could smell the distinct aroma of corn boiling as I went back into my first floor apartment. I suppose he felt that he owned the yard, the garden, the soil, and everything that grew in it. That was fifty years ago, but I still remember the feeling of being robbed of the "First Fruits" of my labor. Now I only grow herbs, and do it ON my deck.

Today's Title for Christ is "The First Fruits of Them That Slept". Unless a person knows a little about the Old Testament Feast Days, this is somewhat of a mystery. The Feast of the First Fruits was one of the Three Mandatory Feast Days in the Torah (Leviticus 23:15-16). It was Seven Sabbaths after Passover, which works out to 50 days. The Day was called "Shavuot" (Hebrew for Seven), "The Feast of Weeks" (because Seven Sabbaths = Seven Weeks), The "Feast of First Fruits", and "Pentecost" (Greek for "50"). Aha! "Pentecost" is a name Christians will recognize. It commemorates the Coming of the Holy Spirit to the Apostles, who were gathered in Jerusalem, a week after the Ascension of Christ into Heaven. (Acts Chapters 1 & 2)

The Crucifixion, Death, Burial, and Resurrection of Jesus took place during Passover. Jesus stayed with His Apostles for forty days, and then Ascended to Heaven. He gave them instructions to wait in Jerusalem until they receive The Holy Spirit. That happened a week later during the Feast of Shavuot. That is why Christians refer to this incredible event as "Pentecost".

In essence, The Apostles are the "firstfruits" of the Harvest of Christianity.

In Today's passage, Jesus is called "The Firstfruits of Them That Slept". In nearly all of Paul's references to "sleep" he is not referring to natural sleep, but the sleep of death. A quick interpretation of this Title could be that Jesus was the First Person to ever rise from the dead, but that wouldn't be the best explanation.

Jesus Himself raised at least three people from the dead during His Ministry on Earth. There was the Widow's Son in Nain, Jairus's Daughter, and, of course, Lazarus. In the Old Testament, there were a few instances as well. So how could Jesus be the First?

All the people who were raised from the Dead in the Bible would eventually die, perhaps years later, and their resurrection didn't imbue them with Immortality. Jesus, on the other hand, was the First to be raised with a Glorified, Eternal Body. This is the eventual outcome of the Great Resurrection of the Dead which will occur at the end of days. That Resurrection is the BIG Harvest that is celebrated with the Feast of Sukkot, which occurs in the Autumn.

That makes Jesus the Firstfruits of Them That Slept. He is the First to Rise Immortal, Glorified, and Magnificent.

Next Time we see Pentecost on the Church Calendar, it will be nice to remember the Holiday's Old Testament origins.

Joining in prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem and for our beloved America.

The 3 records of raising people from the dead seems to represent 3 stages in our life: Child - Jairus’s Daughter, Young Man - Widow’s Son in Nain, Senior Citizen - Lazarus.
