Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Almighty and Everlasting Father,
How Glorious and Wonderful is Your Most Holy Name!

It's been so hot and humid the last couple of days, that I've been hesitant to go out hiking or gardening. It doesn't seem healthy to be exerting oneself in that oppressive heat. I am, after all, not a "spring chicken" anymore. Even the prospect of a nice ride on the Harley seems daunting, as it could rain any minute. So, I've been indoors, on the computer, a LOT more than what I consider "healthy".

One of the byproducts of this slothful activity is the plethora of increasingly boring and, may I say, STUPID videos online. The voices are synthesized, the images are compiled by AI, and the pacing is abysmal. One of them, that I saw recently, is 'THE MOST ISOLATED PLACES ON EARTH".

Drone footage came up on the screen of an abandoned monastery on top of a mountain that was shaped like a giant pillar. The rocky outcrop, which may have been all that was left of a lava tube, or perhaps a core of granite left behind by erosion, towered over the valley below, with no visible means of ascent to the summit. Yet, there it was on top, a cluster of little buildings with a patch of farmland and some sheds for animals.

The ruin was evidence of a sect of Christian Brothers who chose to separate themselves from the world and devote their lives to prayer. That kind of life is fine for them, and of course prayer is important, but it doesn't fit my concept of Christianity. It is very difficult to feed the hungry, visit the sick, clothe the naked, or even preach the Gospel when one is 150 feet above the rest of us.

Some of you may wonder why I have so many references to Pop Culture in a Thread that is supposed to be dedicated to Prayer and Meditation. That's like telling a fish not to mention water. This is the world we live in, and we are called to be IN this world but not OF it. The Apostles were given the Gift of Tongues so that they could communicate with the people of the world. St. Paul quoted Greek Philosophers when discussing the Gospel with the Stoics and Epicureans on Mars Hill in Athens. Most important of all, Jesus spoke in Parables that were stories with a point. He utilized nearly all aspects of the Culture of First Century Judea to teach the people. Coins, Wine, Vineyards, Landlords, Tenants, Kings, Samaritans, Religious Leaders, Tax Collectors, Robbers, Sheep, Bags of Money, Banks, Loans, Interest, Bridesmaids, Bridegrooms, Lamps, Seeds, Weeds, Soldiers, Slaves, and more appeared in Jesus's stories. Whatever He could use to make a point about Eternity went into the teaching.

So here is a story I wrote some time ago, concerning Hollywood:

Hollywood has a way of adding to and messing up a good Bible Story. It is as if the producers don't think there is NEARLY enough sex and violence in the Bible so they go ahead and invent some! The two most recent entries "Noah" and "Exodus-Gods and Kings" were especially egregious. At least in the old days, they tried to stick to the basic story! (LOL...there were "Rock-Monsters" in "Noah"...I am NOT making this up!)

One particularly schmaltzy Hollywood entry was "The Story of Ruth", which I saw when I was about seven years old. A Hollywood invention was that Ruth was a sort of "Vestal Virgin" in the Temple of the Moabite god Chemosh. As a child, she got passed over for a special honor because she had a little bruise on her arm. Heartbroken, she sees some other little girl get the honor. Well, it was a good thing that she got passed over, because the "honor" was being sacrificed to Chemosh! YIKES!

Although there is no evidence of Ruth having that particular experience, the Moabites did indeed worship Chemosh, and there is ample evidence in both Scripture and Archaeology that they worshiped him with sexual ritual and child sacrifice. We may think this makes them very bad people, and, indeed, Scripture curses them for their behavior "unto the Tenth Generation". However, as the Story of Ruth (Which is only 4 chapters long, and an easy read!) tells us, it is possible to break free from the grinding cycle of idolatry, immorality, death, and degradation.

Just recently, I mentioned Ruth because she appears in the Genealogy of Jesus Christ in the First Chapter of Matthew. She is one of four women that show up in this Passage, which is unusual because most Biblical Genealogies list only fathers and sons. Yet, here are four women, all of whom have "questionable origins".

It's not just Jesus who has these Ladies in His Genealogy, but King David Himself. Ruth was his Great Grandmother. Boaz, his Great Grandfather, was of the Tribe of Judah, and that brings in Tamar and Rahab, Bathsheba was David's wife (eventually) and she bore to him King Solomon.

Getting back to Ruth, she risked all to follow her widowed Mother-In-Law Naomi back to Bethlehem. She had to leave the world that she had known all her life, along with the false gods and the evil practices they promoted. However, when she got to Bethlehem, Naomi's ancestral home, she ended up so poor that she faced starvation.

Naomi sent Ruth to pick up bits of grain that had been dropped by the reapers, which the widows had a right to do under the law.

It was there that she ran into the owner of the field, who was a relative of her late husband.

Naomi quickly realized that this relative could be their "savior". He was legally their "Kinsman Redeemer", which has become yet another Name and Title for Jesus.

I never heard the Story of Ruth as a child, except for that schmaltzy Hollywood Movie. I didn't even know it was in the Bible.

There are so many Biblical References in Pop Culture, because the Bible IS the Foundation of our Culture. Back in the 60's, we marveled at how many Biblical References came up in Bob Dylan's songs ("The first one now will later be last", All Along the Watchtower, etc).

People use Biblical Phrases unconsciously, because they are a part of our language. Even the Rolling Stones, for all their rebellion, can't help but reiterate that "All have sinned and fall short of the Glory of God" when they sing:

"Just as every cop is a criminal,
And all the sinners, saints."

And that's why we ALL need a Savior.

Some trivia: As to the pop culture of Jesus’ day, one pastor pointed out that Jesus quoted Aesop, in the tale of the “quack” toad. The toad had an elixir of warts, but the admonition of the potential clients as well as the moral was....
“Physician heal thyself.” (Luke 4:23)

Our own society now is caught up in sexual ritual and child sacrifice, but we don’t see it. Goes to show the more things change, the more they stay the same. It’s so true there’s nothing new under the sun. Father God, open our eyes to the Truth!!
